Hi! I have a 272 L78 block that I'm rebuilding. It's been decked off so their is no date stamp on the pad. I'm looking for a set of matching 840 heads that would be right for the block. What would be a good date for heads to match block? Thanks!

What is the casting date of the block? It should be cast into the passenger side of it?

Find a set of 840 heads that are close to 12 20 68 (Dec. 20, 1968). I'd think you'd want a set dated within a week of of the 20th. You'll need a 163 intake, too. The date is cast into the bottom of those, so it won't be seen once installed. Beware that GM was still making the 163 intake a few years ago (maybe they still are). The newer ones look differently than the original ones from 69.

It's a 4 bolt main. I'm also looking for a 69 70 8 inch timing chain cover. It should have dowel pin holes with AOR on the timming tab.
