I have a 67 RS/SS350 that had a 1968 327 in it when I bought it (about to go up for sale). I have taken several years to acquire a correct 657 block (appropriate date code) along with correct heads,intake, exhaust manifolds, etc. The block came to me bare as far as the oil filter is concerned (I am assuming this is the way the cartridge type oil filter elements mounted).

I purchased a Mr. Gasket #1270 oil filter conversion kit from O'Reilly's to convert to a spin-on type filter. The instructions I downloaded from their web site say to retain the original bypass plate. My block doesn't have one. Anyone know where to get this or what else to do?

Bone yard would be cheapest, as every SBC has one. But I am pretty sure this part is still available new from GM.

The ones for the canister filter are different. No longer available from the dealer.

Thanks, all. So apparently this item is used on all early small blocks that use spin-on filters? If so, I should be able to find them readily available locally. Do they just bolt to the block?

The bypass for the canister filter is different than the spin on ones. I just walked out to the garage and found the NOS one I have. Here is a pic. I have sent you a PM

Thanks. After seeing your photo I went to the garage to look at a late '70's truck engine that I pulled from a Camaro a while back. It's just sitting on an engine stand with no plans. It looks somewhat like your piece but it has a threaded nipple in the center to screw a filter to. If I removed the nipple would this work on my '67 350?

No, that is the newer style bypass and is not the correct height to work with your spin on conversion adapter. The conversion kits are designed to work with the oem style canister bypass that is in the picture I posted.

If you want it dated coded, then use the old can.

Nothing wrong with old cannister filter. Follow the suggestions and use the older bypass.
Take along an adjustable wrench to remove the filter and use a 7/16 socket to remove the two bolts.

Take everything with you home.
