I have a 386 block and the cylinders measure 4.006. Could anyone tell me the measurement for standard bore. Also the date is M-27. Which month is M? The stamp pad is: V0924DZ and has a VIN for an 1969 Norwood car. The M is confusing me. Looking for help. Thanks in advance!

Casting dates can be difficult to read. It could be an "H", which would make sense.

Std. bore is 4.000"

Edit: apparently there is an M code I knew nothing about

Very interesting. Thanks!

"M"-Coded Blocks
There is one exception to the normal block casting date convention that has been observed: some blocks have been seen with "M" cast codes. Research by the Saginaw Metal Casting Operations of GM Powertrain Division has found that these "M" codes are not date codes, but actually a foundry code used to indentify parts that were made to evaluate a casting process change. After evaluating the parts, the blocks would either be destroyed or released into production. There is no way to determine the date an "M"-coded block was poured.

Read the M-coded block section.....

Kurt
I was reading 'Camaro Restoration Guide' by Jason Scott pg 160 and it says that 'M' = dec and that 'I' was skipped as a month code???
I seem to remember from another casting number book 'I' ws skipped due to confusion with '1'?
are the casting number books incorrect???

That book needs to be updated. M code is as stated above by Kurt. "I" was used and is Sept.
