View Full Version : What is a Camaro's top speed?
19zach91 Feb 11th, 08, 07:07 PM What is the top speed of a Camaro any year or engine but please specify what year or engine size you are talking about and if you have any performance modifications.
If you know top speeds for more than 1 year please add
Looking to buy a camaro and want to know what the fastest year is.:)
DjD Feb 11th, 08, 07:19 PM Zach - there is no valid way to answer your question so you can make a decision. Stock new cars hit the speed limiter based on the speed rating on the factory tires it came with. Modified cars are all about how much money you sink into it. Any year car can be made to go faster than the next... It's a game of leap frog and is played in many different ways. At the drag strip, on a road course or at an auto cross and then there is the dyno.
If I were you I would look for the Camaro year and model you like best and can afford, then spend your time and money on making sure it's in the best, safest car it can be. At that you can then start making it go faster. It will be up to you as to how fast you are able to make it go.
This will help you learn about different engine combos and some basics for drag racing. http://www.camaros.net/racing/
DjD Feb 11th, 08, 07:42 PM Just a reminder - The site doesn't promote illegal street activity, it's understood we have all gotten on it in the past and live for the HP and performance. Let's all keep the "I've been XXX mph" conversation in the garage or at the cruise-in or car show unless it's track related...
Thanks for understanding...
guccieng Feb 11th, 08, 08:21 PM what 'fast' are you talking about? top speed? fastest accelleration? fastest depreciation! there are alot of things to consider. there is no one year that really stands out. the camaro lineage is made of mostly small changes. the year to year changes are sometimes unnoticeable.
chops Feb 11th, 08, 11:05 PM Everybody knows the Rental Car is the absolute fastest car on the road.
davidpozzi Feb 11th, 08, 11:21 PM I typed out a nice reply, but I'm afraid to post it and see someone buy a Camaro and make a top end run and go splat!
David
wiskeesour Feb 11th, 08, 11:22 PM 99-02 SS (not z28) Camaros seem to be the 'all-around' performers.

knowledge is power, and in the wrong hands, can be dangerous... i love your cautiousness!:hurray:
gramps68 Feb 11th, 08, 11:47 PM Like everyone said...fastest in what? The maximum speed limit on the highway your driving IS the fastest speed.....even the F-1 McLaren's max speed IS the limit of the highway its driving on!!:beers:

but it's only a 4th gen... they aren't good for nuthin but donor engines/trannys anyway ;-) hate to see someone get hurt though :-(.
The fastest Camaro is whatever one you own! Make up some BS to justify it. Something like "the 82 Camaro was the fastest Camaro ever made. It was the last year of the old-style carburated engines without all the computer crap, and it had factory-ported tripple-hump cylinder heads. Those heads have 4 extra bolts to handle the extra compression, so they're really rare. It's got a better drag coefficient than and other Camaro because it doesn't have all those riced out spoilers they put on them later. All you have to do is take off the EGR and the AIR pump and it'll make 400HP to the rear wheels. I took it to a track day at Talladega and got it up to 185MPH and it was still pulling strong until my fuel pump went out. I'm gonna go back this summer and find out what it'll really do."
foreverlookin Feb 12th, 08, 06:43 AM You nuts! I have too much invested to drive much past 60mph!
Mark .L.W. Feb 12th, 08, 07:38 AM There were Females on I-5 putting on makeup and going over 65 MPH last summer , oh and talking on the cellphone .
Mark.

The answer is in Your foot.
Anybody tell me how to activate this info.& turn it blue?
Old Man Feb 12th, 08, 08:02 AM 99-02 SS (not z28) Camaros seem to be the 'all-around' performers.
Yupe. On a 4th gen if you delete or reset the speed limiter in the ECM program it will go past the top end of the speedometer. Hows that for politically correct?
trex70 Feb 12th, 08, 04:49 PM I dunno, mine went from 0 to $52000 real fast like!

Dan Gottlieb's Big Red Camaro is probably the fastest Camaro. It's a 1969 and has a big block engine with a few modifications. Tops out at over 220 mph.
So if you want the fastest Camaro, you should buy his.
yellow69RS Feb 12th, 08, 09:24 PM 1992 Camaro 305 throttle body fuel injected goes twice the legal speed limit aorund here (55x 2) It's plenty fast enough to get you in trouble on the street, just ask my 21 YO son who has had his license suspended TWICE.

I think the answer is in your sphincter muscle!! :)
captcanuck68 Feb 13th, 08, 08:23 AM Ask a trooper out on the highway as to what top speed for the Cam is... they might come closest to the truth. :)
67SS&99SS Feb 13th, 08, 10:57 AM 98-02 LS1 Camaros have no trouble of doing 160 bone stock. The speed limiter kicks in around that point as previously stated because of the speed rating on the tires. I've seen several modified heads/cam cars do 175-180 in 5th gear (speed limiter removed) but that kind of speed is unsafe. You never know what is on the road in front of you, if someone will pull out in front of you. There is a "tunnel vision" effect at those speeds and you can't see things like you can at 60 mph.
Ghostbuster Feb 13th, 08, 11:11 AM I know this sounds crazy, but..
I have a new 700R4, 32" tries and (temporarily) 2:73 rearend..
My 383 idles at 850rpm..
I'm doing 55mph at 1900rpm..
I'm doing 90mph, at 2900rpm..
I'm thinking she'll do 180mph at the salt flats. :p
Steptoe Feb 13th, 08, 03:14 PM Oh well he goes..
A few yrs back we took our basically stock 69 out on a measured 5 mile straight track
Entered the straight at 130mph.
cool day
Small chamber 202 fuelies, headers , Stock hei, holley 600
Engine never rebult and 105.000 miles on the clock
2:57 Diff 350 trans tyres 235x60x14
All new bushes, tie rod ends, front disc pistons new brakes all round, wheel alignment caster camber toe etc
Well the speedo was way off the clock
Timed between pionts over 1/2 mile 158 mph
Felt good at 100mph
120 you knew you where going fast
130 she seemed to drop close to the road and sat nice and tight, starting to wind out, forget looking at the guages, that split sec of in attention to look at the consult was to dangerous
130 to 158 she felt real nice sat well all the way
Like DJD says, drag or speed test is NOT for the street or any car that doesnt have drive train right up to scratch....too many die that way.
XLexusTech Feb 13th, 08, 03:40 PM So said another way. Lets say I have a 1st gen with a 3:73 rear a tko 600 500 hp small block, car and driver weight in around 3500 lbs.
If I set a goal or 160 mph is this reasonable ?
Fred Ficarra Feb 13th, 08, 03:45 PM Last fall mine was right at 135mph. That's in drive with 4:10's. What's that???? No, not on the road. It was solidly strapped down on a chassis dyno.

I think you would run out of gear before you hit 160.
Geezer Feb 13th, 08, 06:01 PM This one that was posted the other day is pretty quick!

Steptoe Feb 13th, 08, 06:23 PM There are some older posts that have links to gear/wheel diameter rpm calcuators
A sb 1st gen camaro with just mild mods will red line with a big enough track.
Top speed will be limited by red line or close to it. Or bad running gear and you kill yourself.
Hrod382 Feb 13th, 08, 06:29 PM >80mph in a 60s muscle car = death wish
I wouldn't go that far, I've had mine wound up past that (all stock suspension) at the track plenty of times. Now, I can't say that I've done that in a big block Chevelle or Mopar. Those I would think could get spooky in a hurry.
XLexusTech Feb 13th, 08, 07:06 PM I think you would run out of gear before you hit 160.
Did a little snooping found that with a 27 inch tire and a .64 5th gear my RPMS are 4850. SO does this sound like enough HP do get this done?
DjD Feb 14th, 08, 10:28 AM Good time to close this, the OP has not been back...
