View Full Version : A/C Dryer Mount.. Still Scratching My Head..
BlackoutSteve Feb 14th, 08, 12:02 AM The AIM clearly shows a #14 screw (#9420065) fastening the dryer brackets from the wheel-well side, so...
why does it then ask for 5/32" holes to be drilled in the inner fender? This size hole is too small for the screws to pass through without them tapping a thread. (The 5/32" spec is out of frame. woops!)

The repro dryer mounts have 0.435" dia holes in their mounts. Far too large for the screws to tap into.

What gives? Is this a mistake in the AIM or (another) mistake the repro brackets have?
Does anyone know what is actually correct?
-The bracket's first mistake was the top bracket. Not only was the vertical tab welded on the wrong side, it was also on backwards..
parkbrau Feb 14th, 08, 02:46 AM Damn, Still at it. I see what your saying, I think. Mine did not have the screws you show in the picture. If you look at the AIM it shows those are machine screws, a nut and a bolt , the #1 in the square. Thats what I am using however, i have mine screwed in backwards now that i see the picture, mine have the nut fastened on the tire side of the fender well.
Not sure of the brackets.
I'll take my battery out and take pics of the dryer installed. I'll also show you how my screws stick out the wrong way before I fix 'em. It may not be Gold Standard/factory correct but its dang close. Hope your not in a hurry, It will be about 5-6 hours.

Those are the correct tapping screws I have. They are GM 9420065 or, amkproducts' B-12108. There are also no other fasteners (ie; nuts) listed in that assembly.

If you could take a pic, that would be great, thanks.
Camaros-n-Chevelles Feb 14th, 08, 08:33 AM My Camaro is a Factory A/C Car. My Bracket is mounted with a Self Tapping Screw with the head on the outer wheelhousing side.
parkbrau Feb 14th, 08, 11:07 AM Heres my set up. Not completely correct but it works. Also, notice I need a new seal on my compressor? That compressor was good to go for 3 summers, then the leak started up this past summer.
Notice the date and where I was on this special day? With the other Woman.....
BlackoutSteve Feb 14th, 08, 11:56 AM Thanks again John. I'm keen to see a pair of OE factory brackets. I reckon these repros must be wrong.

Any pictures? Or can you tell me what size the holes in the brackets are? Do the screws tap into the brackets to secure them in place as I would expect?
click Feb 14th, 08, 12:02 PM I wonder if J nuts are used? Mine are bolted with nylon center nuts but they do use Jnuts alot up front, I wonder if a little Jnut grabs the screw ?
mark x22 Feb 14th, 08, 05:54 PM my originals measure .295 on big hole and .232 on small hole . the big hole goes against fender well & bolt head goes on tire side . you should probably drill out fender well for clearance .cheap fix use J nuts like click said .the reproduction parts were probably blank cut then put in the die wrong and bent .
mark x22 Feb 14th, 08, 06:11 PM the .232 hole is a little loose try a .190. then try screw .
BlackoutSteve Feb 14th, 08, 10:07 PM Thanks a heap guys.
I will modify these cruddy repros (again) so they fasten as intended, by reducing the hole sizes to suit the screws..
It will be easy enough for me to do so, and I'll getter a better night's sleep! :p
parkbrau Feb 15th, 08, 12:09 AM Those are not OE brackets. But they work and with the dryer tucked up there and the battery in the way you cant tell.
BlackoutSteve Feb 15th, 08, 03:44 AM Done!
Thanks everyone.. :beers:

BlackoutSteve Jul 22nd, 08, 03:15 AM Sooooo. After getting the correct brackets and drier and drilling the drier mounting holes in the most correct location as possible.. (Thanks to those here who helped me with that.)
Who has the problem of their drier bracket hitting/touching their battery

click Jul 22nd, 08, 08:30 AM Mine may not be in exact original location but its not anywhere near the battery, you might have to scootch it over a bit

BlackoutSteve Jul 22nd, 08, 12:58 PM Thanks.. My bottom bracket location is pretty much the same as yours.
It's the top bracket that is causing the interference.
The holes I have drilled are in the center of the raised vertical "rib-like" section of the inner fender.
