i need some education..according to all the expert sites the firewall penetration of the speedo cable is on a particular side for different cars and different engines..is this info all inclusive? even for van nuys built stuff? i looked at a true 396 automatic ss 69 camaro numbers matching van nuys built car this week. it has speedo cable coming thru the firewall on the right side of the steering column. right is from drivers point of view. according to everything i have read, this is wrong. is it possible the experts missed something? i am confused. if anyone can shed light i would appreciate it..i also looked at a similar 396 car from norwood and the norwood car had the speedo penetrating left of the column. did van nuys do whatever they chose, as it appears to be a numbers matching car? i am looking for education only. not trying to critique the guys car..am i correct in that if his car was once a 4 speed his speedo cable is correct? please help. thanks

I don't think the engine makes a bit of difference.

Camaro Muncies have the speedo connection on the passenger side. The speedo cable for a muncie equipped Camaro (an SS or Z/28 by definition, but could be a 302, 350 or a 396) comes out to the right (inboard) of the column.

All automatic Camaro's have the speedo drive on the drivers side of the trans, and the speedo cable pierces the firewall outboard of the column.

Not sure about 3 speeds and saginaws, but think they are outboard too.

Are you sure it was originally an automatic? Maybe someone switched out the 4 speed?
