Hi,
Thanks to all of you, I am almost completed restoring my 68 Camaro.
I have one last issue before painting this beauty.
I installed a brand new speedo cable and housing but the thing is clicking and the speedometer is jumoping around like crazy.
I was told I did not have to lubricate the cable, but now I am thinking I should have shot it with WD 40 or graphite?
Any suggestions? There are no kinks anywhere in the line and even the speedometer is brand new.

Joe, Did you make sure the cable is seated well in the speedo? Dont Use WD40. It will eventually gum up on you. I think grahite is better.

Hi John,
I am not sure if it is even tightened all the way. I have to get back in there and secure it better.
As far as lubricating it, the cable and housing I bought came as one sealed unit and they said it didn't need greasing. I don't know how to get the cable out of the housing without breaking it??
I can build a car but I cannot install a speedo!

The speedo cable should slide out of the housing via one end - the speedometer end. That end has an end fitting installed (the part that goes into your speedometer) while the other end (what goes in the trans) is just the end of the cable. So take it loose from your speedometer, and it should just pull right out with little effort... and will go back in the same way.

FYI... I just installed a new cable in my '68 and had similar problems. I routed the cable and had is all ready to attach to the trans. But before I attached it, I tried to turn the cable by hand. It would not turn by hand... was VERY tight. It shouldn't be. What I found, after going through the whole cable routing again, is that I had bends in the cable that were too sharp, and that's what was causing the tightness. After I corrected them by moving the cable around a bit, I checked this by simply attaching a drill to the trans end of the speedo cable and running the drill... watching my speedo move while I did this. It's a good way to check operation before you lower the car down off the jacks.

My point is though... it sounds like maybe you've got some bends in the cable that are too tight. This would cause the behavior you are describing.

Thanks Bob...
I found that the cable was hardly even in the speedometer at all.
I was working blindly last night and I thought I had it tight but not so.
I tightened it up real good, and now it is a bit better but still the speedo wavers back and forth a bit.
I tried to pull the cable through the housing but it wouldn't move.
Both ends look sealed. I wish I had bought the cable and housing seperate but this is all they had.
Frustrating. I don't see any kinks in the line but it does make some turns here and there. I routed it over top of the tranny and up behind the master cylinder. It looks prety smooth. Maybe when I get more patience I'll disconnect the whole thing again and do as you said. Try to pull one end through the housing. Worse comes to worse I will break the cable, and I already have a spare.
Thanks for all the help. Now I have to figure out why my fuel gauge stopped working after I finished the speedo!
I must have knocked a wire loose but I don't know what color the fuel gauge wire is???
