One of the things that concerns me when I drive my car around is how easy it is to steal. I feel like I cant leave it anywhere for thirty seconds. The installation of a hood lock is the first thing that I have done for theft prevention. I purchased the kit from Amazon for $30. It is caledl a Megatronix HL-35 Hood lock. To install this it does require some cutting of the bracket that is supplied, but is very easy. I am sure there are cleaner ways of doing this and would love to see what others have done.

Here is the part of the kit that I have used:

In order for the hood latch to clear the hood lock bracket part of it will need to be cut off like so:

Next you need to drill a couple of 1/8" holes to install the bracket. I considered welding it, but was not sure how well this was going to turn out,

Here is what the what it looks like in the locked postion:

In order to lock and unlock this you have to get on you knees, but to me is worth the extra piece of mind.

I realize that this is not a total solution and can still be stolen. In the next couple of weeks I will be installing a ignition power lock so no one will be able to hot wire the car.

I sorta fabricated one by placeing a thick L bracket at the horn area and hood. I then fabricated a shot cable that gets secured by a master lock. Same issue to open, but it would hold someone up if needed.

If anyone really wants your car they will just flat bed it w/an alarm going off.
But,it is always good to slow them down (the theifs)

Thanks for posting the lock info. There was a recent post about JC Whitney no longer selling this type of lock (Wolo) and there is a member or two looking for it.
Don't forget to hook up the starter interupt part as well, the idea is to layer theft deterents and make it more difficult to steal.
It looks like you installed it with the cable going towards the passenger side. Is there still enough cable to get the lock back up to the dash area under the steering wheel?
One TC member welded his in:

James,
Amazon sells two brands of this type of lock. I did not use the starter ground wire since I will be installing a ignition power lock. It is much better. http://www.powerlock.com/details.php

I am one of the ones looking for something like this

I noticed that the Megatronix HL35 is built for Vans. Did you find the hood lock cable to be long enough?

Thanks for the find and pics!

I did not want to run it inside the car and have to run it through the firewall, so I purchased the 3 1/2 foot one. I access it from just under the bumper with a key.

Sure- I have things apart right now as i am installing my a/c. Nothing fancy, but it does the job as mentioned above. I agree if someone wants it, they will get it!

How does defeat hot wiring?

Looks like the Megatronix HL35 and HL5 (3.5 and 5 foot cables respectively) are on close out:

I found some mention of a HL7 but looks discontinued already.

How does defeat hot wiring?

Not sure, but I opted to not do that part of the install for a far better option that I will be doing in two weeks. Take a look at this:

Yeah Powerlock looks like an interesting system, especially coupled with a hood lock.

How does defeat hot wiring?
Note 100% sure, but I think the wire you see in the picture becomes grounded when the lock mechanism is activated. If the ignition circuit is grounded by connecting this wire to the coil, the car will not start. If the hood is locked, you cannot access the ignition circuit to unground it, so it will not start by hotwiring under the dash, or even if you have the ignition key.
Make sense?
Anyone have the instruction sheet, that would clear things up?
I currently use the disconnect battery and lock the hood with a chain and padlock method, but this looks like a big improvement over that.

I think it also is hardwired into the starter solenoid, so is not like you can cut wires and reroute easily around it.

Here is the picture I am posting for 68camrs. I like how simple this is. For anyone who is thinking of a hood lock should consider this:

Thanks for posting this for me, feel free to post the modifications I sent you by email using the square bracket at the horn area. Thanks again. Where do people store pics online so they can be uploaded, first time i have confronted that issue.

Get a photobucket account for free. Once you upload your photo all you have do is paste IMG Code that they supply in your post and it will automatically display the photo based on the IMG code. It is easier than it sounds.
