Hello, after I took the vinyl top off this '69 I have there are holes ranging from pin-sized, to dime size in about 10 different spots!

I want to leave the car as a bare hardtop when I finish the resto, question is:

Has anyone replaced the roof outer skin with another off a donor car?

If so, any tips on doing this?

Or should I cut out, patch and weld new metal in the worst areas of the roof?

Thanks for any guidance..

Well for starters, you can just about be guaranteed all the holes that you find can be almost doubled in size once you get them cleaned up. As for repairs, fix them, you dont want to have to swap a roof out. If your not going to put the vinyl back on, they are going to have to be welded back up, and if you were going to put the vinyl back on you could fix them with some patches and some of the steel bonding glues that are made today.

Thanks for the answer! I will probably need to take some small pieces off a donor car's roof, because the metal is curved in the portions that are the worst...will have them welded in, and ground down to match the rest of the panel...I guess a slight bit of filler will be needed to get it smooth again, but it sure beats putting on a whole roof skin.

Thanks again...
