I have a 68 SS/RS that has been painted about one year ago, it was painted with du-pont and it has three coats of clear. What grit sand paper should I use to remove samll bumps in the clear coat?

Some guys prefer to start lower with a 1200 grit then gradully work up to 2000. Now you really have to be careful of burn through but it can be done successfully it just gets the proccess started a bit faster.

You don't mention what type of DuPont paint was used. It can make a difference. Old lacquer type cuts fairly fast and some urethanes can be like granite after they have set up. If you're careful you can use 1200 and then 2000. If you want to be even more careful, use 2000 exclusively.
I'm assuming you have a urethane clear because lacquer dulls and you probably wouldn't have been happy driving the car around for a year like that. Be prepared for a workout. It might sand very hard. Be sure to check often to make sure you aren't going too far with the sanding though, just in case.

I use 1000 to knock down the bumps and then finish with 1500, 2000 seems to just slide, for me anyway, btw I find that 3M paper last 3 times as long as the other brands. Just stay away from edges and body lines and you should be OK.

I know this should go without saying but I have seen people do it because of the time it takes to do it by hand . NEVER EVER EVER use an orbital sander or any powered sander to wet sand your car!!!! http://www.camaros.net/forum/biggrin.gif

Why? body shops do it all the time.1500 on a DA.Beats sanding the skin off your fingertips.

I grew up in a body shop and know owners of many more and they all say the same thing. NEVER use the orbitals.. but hey if you are comfortable doing that way Feel free.. http://www.camaros.net/forum/biggrin.gif
