View Full Version : Routing hoses on aftermarket A/C system

I'd like to know if there is any good/bad way to route the A/C hoses on a custom/aftermarket A/C system. I have a Vintage Air setup, with the 4-way bulkhead connector on the firewall below the fender bolt. My compressor is a mid-mount setup on the passenger side. I do plan to run all of my lines behind the fender. But I don't know where/how to run the lines to the condensor or drier: ie under or through the radiator support ? I know how to make everything work, but I want the cleanest looking install.

I also have an R/S, so I need to make sure my hoses don't interfere with the doors.

Thanks for any suggestions.

I like to use hard line to get under the core support, then use rubber or braided to the comprssor / dryer. Vintage Air has U bend it tubing in 6" lentghs

Thank you for the reply. I'm not very familiar with A/C hard line tubing. Is this tubing sort of like thin-wall conduit that you just bend with a tubing bender ? And how are the ends put on ?

It has preformed ends, it is soft aluminum, and you can bend it with a bender, or your fingers for that matter. Also, it only comes with the ends premade in 6" increments, but if you want you can bend up something like 3/16", 1/4" brake line tubbing into a pattern to the size and bends you want, ship it to VA, and they will make duplicates out of the larger A/C tubing. Pretty cool stuff and a real clean look.

I made a bracket and put the dryer in the vertical right behind where the battery would sit. If your battery is in the engine compartment stop reading now.I got two straight fill fittings right at the bottom where they go in the opening at the fender and all you see is about 18"of suction hose and pressure hose. The remaining is tucked all away.I use hose on everything. The only thing you see is the two that dive down into the opening.I ran the heater hoses in the fender as well, also the trans cooler lines. If you do this keep the hot lines away from the cold.I ran the drain out of the body mount opening as well this made for a clean look to.

Some people freak out if there are and wiring (or wiring looms) visible, Including plug wires. And any lines or hoses are forbidden too.

Most everyone else likes to see those items as long as they are installed neatly, logically, and serve a purpose. This would be my choice.

I like the idea of those hardline tubings, VA is just down the road from me, so that is a great option.

David, do you have any pictures of your A/C lines and drier ?

Thanks

From a function standpoint, pay attention to the line that runs from the evaporator to the compressor, it returns the cool low pressure refrigerant and more importantly the cool oil back to the compressor for lubrication. The ideal is a slight grade down from the evap to the compressor. Any big “u” bends trap the oil. hard lines or not.

I'll try to get some its hard to get them inside they turn out to dark even with a flash. I also made a bracket for my high and low pitch horns in the other fender so you don't see them when you open the hood.If your not in to big a rush I try to get my buddy that has a $5000 camera to take some this week mine just doesn't do to good. He wants to take some pictures of my progress anyway. The bracket was a piece of 3/8"x 8" long pencil tubing top welded into a ball and welded to a 1/4"x1"x 2 1/2" flat bar with two tabs welded to it for the brackets and the foot was bolted to the inner fender well. You cant really see the sight glass but my buddy said there is no real need to see it. The horn bracket was along the same lines.

I'm not in a huge hurry. I'd also like to see a picture of a $5,000 camera !.

Thanks

Mine originally went under headlight, around rad support, & behind battery.

When it put my RS Conversion I ran one up under rad support & other low under headlight assembly. Lower one just clears light assembly for operation

All tucked in place nice & neat
