I am painting the Z-28 stripes on my sons 68 Camaro and the assembly manual is not clear on the exact location of the top of the rear stripe. How many inches is the pin stripe from the window moulding? The book gives the distance from the vinyl top moulding but that is all. Any help would be appreciated. I would've purchased a stencil kit but this is THE budget camaro!!

Not putting them on my 68RS (at leats for now) if your not getting the kit you might want to get a cloth measureing tape ( sewing kits have them) and attend a car show or cruise night and ask one of the owners that have them applied already if you can take the measurements for your sons's 68. you will find that most will either let you or do it themselves while your there.

Get a hold of Year One, They have the measurements in their catalog. They also had them for my Roadrunner. I think the number is 1-800-450-9450. Any way it is YEAR ONE restoration products in Atlanta Georgia.

Don't know about the '68, but on my (original) '69 Z/28, the top edge of the outer (narrow) stripe is 5/8" from the bottom of the bright molding below the back window.

? for John Z/// Are the stripes the same width front to back. reason i ask is in the 68 Factory assembly manual Page 444 it shows a measurement of 20.88 from the outside of the inner pin stripe on the Cowl area of the stripe and a measurement of 19.70 on the header panel area of the stripe. with the outer fender side pinstripe cowl area at 6.56 and the header pinstripe at 5.95. this are measured from the outer side edges of the hood. the trunk stripes are rear stripe width 14.75 and 7.02 from the trunk edge and the tail panel stripe is 14.48 wide with a 5.96 from the edge. it also shows an un-equal meausrment for the gaps between the pin stirpes and the main stripe. I had always thought they were the same width all the way around..
guess im just courious if your stirpes are also of un-equal widths and all.\

For those of you striping a 69. DO NOT use the 19.70 dimensions for the width of the front Z28 stripes shown in the 69 assembly manual they are a TYPO. Measure your hood, it is only something like 44" wide, two 19.70 inch wide stripes would basically cover the entire hood. The proper dimension is around 14.25 inches (from memory - I have my original measurements from before the car was reapinted the first time written in my AM). The arrow that indicates it is the stripe width should continue all the way to the edge of the hood so that it is locating the edge of the inner 1/4" pinstipe on the hood, and not indicating the total width of the stripe.

The rear stripes do taper down about 1/3" from the front edge of the trunk to the rear lip.

Hey guys,
I just got a email from Year One and they are saying it is 2.5 inches from the window moulding. That is what I am going to go with so thanks so much for all of the input. We live in the middle of nowhere and a website like this and enthusiasts like you all, make life alot better. Camaros rule!! Thanks again, Bill

Stripes aren't designed initially to be parallel; if they were, there's a visual illusion that takes place that makes them look narrower the further they are from your eye - that's whey they're wider at the cowl than they are at the front of the hood and header panel by just enough to make them appear to be parallel. Same thing for the rear stripes - just a little wider at the front than at the lip of the deck lid.

Had a hard time convincing my painter of this years ago until I laid out the stripes for him with masking tape on one of my Cobras; laid the front dual stripes exactly parallel, rolled the buck outside where he could see it from 10-15 feet away, and he finally agreed that they looked like they got narrower toward the windshield. Then I gave him my diagram with the stripes wider at the furthest point from the view, and sure enough, they "looked" parallel when they were done. Some stencil kits don't do this, and the stripes look funny.

the stripes for vinyl top is the same as non
vinyl top, measure from the bottom of window
molding instead of the vinyl top molding .62" this is what my chevrolet assembly instructions manual calls for. hope this helps. i can scan and send you the photo for the front, rear or both.

I should have listened to you guys!! I should have purchased the stencil. If you do go the masking tape route, use the plastic tape as the results are alot nicer. Thanks again for all of your help it is really appreciated. Bill
