Hi,

Hopefully some of you can help my way forward to get my factory 1969 a/c back functioning. I acquired the car with the a/c recently put back to factory. It was not blowing cold...had it refilled (added dye) and it was blowing cold for about two weeks.

One night after using a/c on a cruise home, I shut down the car and heard loud hissing from front of compressor (some visible green dye on front of compressor- blown seal?) it hissed for hours until empty.

Next day, I noticed green dye on the passenger side under the suitcase and evorator drain tube-assume I blew the evaporator, too?

Anyone suggest what happened?

I want to repair system and get back to working again.

What do you suggest I do-besides replacing evaporator and get a new compressor aboard? all the hoses are all new and most other parts...did I ruin and need to replace some of the newer parts (dryer)?

Checklist would be awesome...

thanks!

Joe

The chances of 2 things failing at the same time are remote. The front seal on a Frigidaire compressor is ceramic and should not fail suddenly. That is not to say it didn’t happen just that you need to make sure you didn’t blow the high pressure pop-off valve that should be on the back of the compressor. If that popped, it was because of high head pressure which is caused by too much refrigerant or a condenser failure(not condensing properly). You need to take a careful look at the whole system to determine where the most concentration of dye is. Many of the dyes can be enhanced visually under a black light. I would strongly recommend that you have a professional look at it. They have the tools necessary to work on ac systems. It will probably save you money in the long run.
Yes you will need to replace the dryer when you replace the failed component. It has desiccant in it that once it is exposed to the air, its ability to absorb moisture in the system is compromised.
