View Full Version : Roller tip rockers in a BB wrooster Feb 24th, 08, 07:26 AM My questions is, will I be able to use standard height valve covers in a big block with roller tip rockers? Thanks Wrooster TraxUnderground Feb 24th, 08, 08:05 AM I had a problem with clearance. I have the Crane Gold roller rockers on my BB and they wouldnt clear my Moroso tall valve covers. I had to switch to a tall valve cover that had the long top bolts. (the bolt head was at the top of the valve cover for the top bolts(manofold area))The valve covers that have a recessed area to screw in the top bolts were a problem. Thats where the rocker was touching. It was rubbing the recessed area molded socket clearance. Its difficult to explain and I may not be explaining it well but there are clearance issues. I assume with the short covers it may be worse. Other roller rockers may give more clearance than the Crane. The Crane's are squared off and I believe the Comp cams RR are contoured, so they may clear. Take a look at my photobucket album. Theres a pic of my engine and aluminum valve cover in there. You will see the rear bolt channels on the valve cover are placed outside the cover for better clearance...Others will chime in and let you know what works. I can only tell you my setup. Good luck Unreal Feb 24th, 08, 10:09 AM I used Comp's Magnum roller tip rockers with stock valve covers and stock gaskets on my 427/425 with no clearance problems. It uses stock rocker studs and rocker balls. I saw a resto of an L88 Corvette on Dreamcar Garage a few years ago. They used aluminum valve cover spacers (about 1/2", I think) so they could use stock covers and clear full roller rockers. They painted the lower gasket silver in an effort to make the setup look as stock as possible. Fred Ficarra Feb 24th, 08, 10:19 AM Gary, Thanks for the pictures! Fun! Have you fired it up yet? I see your MSD is on the firewall. Mine was there for a short time and it died. Too hot. I extened all the wires and moved it to the front of the radiator support. I learned why it's called a firewall. Again, loved your pictures. Got sound? BigBlock1969RS Feb 24th, 08, 10:24 AM Comp's Magnum Roller Rockers here with Billet Specialties short valve covers, no problems clearing. If you are really concerned about clearance get some modeling clay from a hobby store and put some clay on an intake and exhaust rocker (with some motor oil on the top of the clay so it doesn't stick to the valve cover, put the valve cover back on and then rotate your engine 2 full revolutions and then pop the cover off and then measure your clearance. That is the only way to be certain before you fire things up. TraxUnderground Feb 24th, 08, 10:44 AM Gary, Thanks for the pictures! Fun! Have you fired it up yet? I see your MSD is on the firewall. Got sound? Hey Fred..thanks. I did break in the motor a while ago. Its on the stand now. Just back from paint. No sound or clips yet still trying toi getting it together...thanks! Chevy-SS Feb 24th, 08, 11:10 AM On my BB I am using Crane gold full roller rockers (standard ratio), with stock Chevy chrome BB valve covers. Here's a couple of pics. If you look through the oil filler hole, you can see the gold rocker. I use one extra-thick valve cover gasket, in addition to one regular. Been like this for almost 10 years, with a number of different cams and BB engine combos. I really like the stock valve covers............ At the moment, I'm using a Crane hyd roller cam, with 587/610 lift. http://csgbenefits.org/valvegasket2.jpg http://csgbenefits.org/valvegasket1.jpg --- |
