I need to know if its an electrical problem or if its a linkage cable that might be damaged. The guy's kid whom I'm buying if from was trying to shift out of park by just wrenching on the gear shift and not putting his foot on the brake. so now when you put your foot on the brake it still won't shift out. any ideas?

Try turning the key to the first click, but not to the on position, and try to take it out of park. When the key is in the "on" position a solenoid operates that locks the selector in park, the brake switch just interupts the electrical connection to the solenoid. If that works for you, suspect a problem with the brake switch.
