Hi all,
I converted my '68 Camaro SS to a manual tranny and just received the parts to "build" the console shift plate assembly and it has me a bit stumped.

I got the boot, and the console shift plate and a retainer and a slider plate.

I cannot figure out how the slider plate and retainer attach to the console shift plate.

Can anyone shed some light on this? The place I order from is out of stock on the Camaro "how to" book.
Thanks!

Somebody got confused. With a manual console there is no slider just the boot, the boot retainer, a black plastic cone that fastens to the back of the shifter plate to fill the void to the rubber boot.

i believe there is a plastic slider in the counsel. i replaced my broken original with a repo and i wadded up on the first power shift, i would leave it out.

Absolutely.

68's only used a slider in the console on stick shift cars. It didn't work very well, and in 69 they went to the "tunnel" and a convention boot on the floor. Converting to a 69 setup would be a good solution, but the woodgrain is a different color.

The slider just "slides" into the 2 grooves in the underside of the trim plate. These groove are formed when you bolt the retainer plate to the underside of the trim plate. There should be 4 screws to attach it.

There's also a round rubber donut that's supposed to slide over the shifter stick to kinda seal up the big hole in the slider.

Putting my console back together is on my list for tonight, I'll try to remember to get a picture up.

The info is also in the AIM. If you don't have one, let me know and I'll scan in the page for you (D55 - A4)

OK,...
I think I got it. It is starting to make sense now....

I wish I knew I could convert to the '69 version.
I like that setup a lot better.
Too late for that now. I will make it fit and work.
Thanks again to all of you!

The 68 slider thing was just a bad idea.
Mine was missing the slider, but the metal holding plate was intact. I bought the correct boot, but it just didn't look right with the big hole there. I refuse to put in a slider.
I finally just bought a Hurst mid size boot, and it looks much better.
I'd like to see a 69 up close, or other 68 ideas.....

I use a hurst super boot on mine. It's so tall it touches the bottom of the slider. Works pretty well. Now all I gotta do is figure out how to keep the slider from getting all scratched up!

I went with the 69 hardware on my 68. Didn't like the 68 slide that came on it originally.

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one. I've been considering just removing my whole console. Not only because of the slider thing, but also cuz 2nd and 4th bang the shift plate. I've tried adjusting the linkage but to no avail. Very bad design, the '68 shift plate area.

... I guess I'm one of the lucky ones, ...I put all the original pieces back in, ...and have never had an issue with it...

That sounds familiar too. I had those same problems. Someone on this board offered the solution of longer bolts and washers to mount the shifter. It moves the shifter over to the left just enough to clear 2nd and 4th.
The slider was very tight in mine so I shaved a bit off the sides so it wouldn't stick.

I bought th slider for my 68 and after a week, it looked like junk...scratched up and kept sticking and binding. After trimming and trimming, I threw it in the trash !

Think's Joe ,That will get me started. I figured it was about time I ordered an AIM ,so I did from Classic Ind. For 19.95 suppose to be a copy of the factory manual they used as the cars came down the production line. Enjoy and Happy Motoring Joe

Yeah, you'll enjoy the AIM. In the mean time if you have any questions about those parts let me know.

Guess I'm in the minority here. My 68SS small block car came originally with it's console and I have no issues at all. I like the slider. I've had the 69 set up in both 69Z and 69SS and it's fine, but there's no reason the 68 set up shouldn't work equally well. I no longer have the factory shifter however, but rather a Hurst comp plus and you can adjust the lever throw stops to eliminate all the over travel some of you are talking about. You end up with a nice short tight throw and comes no where near to hitting the console. Slider works great, no binding at all. Also using the stock boot and retainer on the tunnel. The only part I've removed is the round filler piece that mounts on the lever as shown in the drawings above from the AIM. Personally I like the look without the console and with the small factory boot, but it came with the console and I'll probably leave it in.

I've never seen that round piece, 13C in the drawing. I don't have that on mine. Will that fit with a Hurst shifter instead of the Muncie?

Personally I don't like the slider assembly at all. I had to put some felt under the shift plate (part 9) to stop the noise caused by the slider vibrating against the shift plate.

Thanks for the tip on the shifter adjustment SY1. that might also help with the vibration of the slider against the shifter. Ultimately I'm planning to go to a 69 setup.

Kevin not all the Hurst shifters have the adjustable stops on the shifter body. Some of the universal Hurst shifters have no adjustable stops on them. Because of this the shifter lever can travel much further than it needs to. These type of Hurst shifters will however have circular indentations on the shifter body where the stop bolts would normally be. I've drilled the bodies at those locations and installed good grade 8 hardened bolts with nuts and lockwasher myself. This is basically the same stop that would have come on a Hurst if so equipped. You can then adjust the stops to eliminate the over travel on your shift lever and end up with a nice tight short throw. If someone has opened up the tunnel hole and installed an oversized boot, it's easy to adjust these through the tunnel from inside the car. If you still have the factory tunnel opening and small boot as I do, it's probably easier to have someone help you from underneath the car while you move the lever.
