Can you have a 10 bolt rear rebuilt to be just as good or better than a 12 bolt? I am going to beef up my 350 and many of my friends are telling me to get a 12 bolt, however I didn't know if my original 10 bolt "REBUILT" would be OK..

There are 2 10 bolts. The 8.2", which was standard in our cars, will never approach the strength of a 12 bolt (8.625")
The "corporate" 10 bolt (8.5") can be made nearly as strong as a 12 bolt.
Coporate 10 bolts were used (I think) 71-76 in all GM cars. Those used in X body's (Novas and similar BOP cars) will bolt into our first generation camaros.
The "ole 8.2" can take a pretty reasonable amount of abuse, for a while. Stick shifts, transbrakes, and traction are not recommended.

Hey NoMellow69 - I've got an 8.2 that has lived behind my BBC for about 10 years now.
The only reason I have not replaced it with a 12 Bolt is 1. cost and 2. It's still in good shape (and I'm still buying diapers). Here's the setup - Auburn Posi unit, Richmond 3.55 gears, Summit Rear cover \ Girdle, and Moser axles. But to quote JimM - it does not see slicks or the rack -if it did I would have replaced it years ago... To answer your question - it depends on your driving habits and use....

A 12-bolt is 8.785".
I like the idea of a 9" b/c........
1. Stock axle retention housing ends;
2. Sucker is STRONG; and
3. I can buy an extra pumpkin and have it already already set-up for, say, a 3.00 for highway use and a 4.11 for the track.
Heck, my classmate back in HS could R&R a 9" pumpkin in about 45 minites!!
All this said, a 9" AIN'T stock!!
