View Full Version : What the heck is this?

Below are a few pictures of my transmission. I have no idea what this is but I do know that it leaks. Doesn't leak much, but that is not the point.

Can anyone explain to me what this is? And what to do to "cover" it so it doesn't continue to leak? The nipple you see can be pushed up inside. I'm not sure what that does.

Any help would be appreciated.

It appears to be a grease fitting. I've never seen one like that on a car tranny. I'd say take the big nut out and replace the fitting and put some gasket sealant on the threads.

Could the drip be the 'liquid' from old grease? Gear lube does have its own smell.

When you push the nipple inward, more liquid comes out. I was thinking it might be transmission fluid. But i really don't know.

i can't really tell from the picture but some transmissions have a switch installed as part of the emission control system.

I don't recognize that trans, what is it?

It's a TCS (Transmission Contolled Spark) switch that is broke off. It was used on 70 and up models for a few years for emission control which only allowed vacuum advance to work in high gear untill the car warmed up.

By the color of the oil dripping it is probably ATF which was used in some make and models of cars.

They made plugs for those at one time but if you can't find anything it's "spark plug type thread" so maybe that will help you to come up with something.

I agree, it is a TCS, it looks like a saginaw 4 spd. to me.

It does look like a broken off TCS switch as noted, and it is a Saginaw 4 Speed, and I also see it is on a truck bellhousing with the large front bearing register, you can tell by the squared off bottom area. That bellhousing is trouble as the trans is only centered by the bellhousing bolts. It usually leads to 4 gear syncro problems and pilot brg issues as well as vibrations etc.

Not so if it has a Sag. P/U tranny's T/O bearing piece on it! I took my P/U's t/o bearing deal off my 3-speed and put it on my Sag. 4-speed and everything fit fine.

But read here to get a ring if you don't have one and it is actually a car Sag. on a P/U B/H!!

However, GM cast literally millions of the 460 486 bell housing to cover the larger flywheel and clutch in 1970's light trucks, both 6 and 8 cylinder. The problem is the Muncie SM 465 truck transmissions had a 5 1/8" (5.125) front bearing retainer, so you can't use it with the smaller car transmissions.

Luckily, a 4 11/16" x 5 1/8" bushing is available from Novak part # BR-4 (about $40) at www.novak-adapt.com or 877-602-1500.

Dennymac, (Dennis), also sells these here. He recently said “I appreciate the recommendation. If you want to include me as a friendly supplier of these adapter rings, I get $28US delivered for them. My contact information is cell phone 502-558-1043, and email is aguy@dennymac.com Best of luck.
Thanks again. Dennymac Dennis McLeod

I bought one of the adapter rings, and used the truck bell housing, which cost $25 at my local salvage yard, where they use the truck bell housings for door stops.

The 486 dust cover is GM part #340 254."
