I have a m-22 with a hurst shifter it came already hooked up so I put it in like it was . I drove the car it seemed as though my 1st gear was where my 2nd and my 2nd was where my 1 st was and same on the 3rd and 4th side. The linkages had been altered i went out and brought new linkages and the seemed to be to long the threads wouldnt allow me to hook them to the shifter.the ends on the transmission are facing down is that right ?what am i doing wrong ?

yes i seen them mount backwards with your same problem
the linkage flanges should face up in a 12 oclock position
in neutral.
use a 3/8 rod or drill bit in the shifter main body to line up the shifter (there is a hole in the body)
to clarify look here:

Maybe this pic will help.................. This may not be the exact same linkage as what u have, but at least it shows the layout of the rods and such.
