Does any TC member know if the Delco Eye was standard equipment on original Delco Batterys? I recently bought a NOS Y77 Battery and it has all caps in the box, I was wondering if it should also have the Delco Eye Cap in 1 of the cells. If so what colour should the lettering be? Thanks in Advance.

I sold, filled and installed a lot of Delco batterys in the 60's and 70's. They came with plastic plugs glued in the top of each cells (to keep them fresh) that I popped down into the battery before I filled them. I used the Delco Eye that came in the plastic bag with the 5 other caps to pop the plastic plugs. As I recall, the Eye was supposed to go in the second cell from the positive terminal. A Y series battery would have yellow paint around the Eye and yellow lettering on the top of the battery, a R series would have red paint around the Eye and red lettering on the top of the battery. All the rest of the caps should have matching color Delco insignia on the top of them too. If your battery came with caps that have black pebble grain type vents, thats a much later style. Earlier caps only had one small hole in the top of each cap for a vent. The Eye came standard on earlier batterys.

Thanks Jon,
In the GM Camaro parts book ( dated 73 ) it only shows 2 part numbers for the Delco Eye, # 1966611 for Green Printing on the eye and # 1966114 with Red Printing on the eye.
There is no part number listed for the Yellow Eye? What would the green eyes be for?
You are correct , my Y77 has Yellow Lettering. It also has the pebble type caps as you stated. My car came with the Y77 battery, but it died in the late 70,s, guess I should have saved it, but it is long gone and I can not remember what caps were on it.

The green Eyes were used on the G series of low priced, low amperage batterys best used for 6 cylinder cars that start easily. The G series batterys only had a 1 year warranty and that was stretching it.

P.M. me your address and I'll send you a NOS yellow Delco Eye.

My original Delco died when it was three years old. Long gone. But I still have the original side post cables! And I forget what the 'colors' were but it had an eye.
