: conv. front header to windshield space
coach420 Oct 28th, 01, 06:25 AM I recently bought a 67 convertible with a top that needs replacing. However, it is very difficult to latch the top to the windshield. There is about a 1/2" space between the windshield and the apparent mating surface of the header, and it is most visible where the rubber piece is above the mirror on the windshield.
The prior owner replaced the windshield and the windshield wipers are striking the chrome trim at the top of the windshield. I have ordered and re-ordered windshield wipers to be sure I have the correct size for a convertible. The vent windows and the windshield appear to line up well.
I am wondering if the gap should be there, and if not, can it be eliminated when the new top is installed through some adjustments to the mechanism, or do I have an improperly installed windshield. If the latter, can you adjust the windshield to tilt it backwards? Has anyone ever encountered this problem? I think it would be better to sort out a potential windshield issue before I install a new top. Thanks your help!
Mark C Oct 29th, 01, 03:10 AM Check some previous posts on the windsheild wiper sizes. Ricks First Gen had a bunch of coupe wiper arms that were mislabeled as convertible arms. Someone else on this site replaced one set with another before finding out that both were coupe blades. Finally got the right ones on the third try.
You can not tip the windsheild back.
If you leave a top down for long periods of time it gets very hard to get it to reattach to the header. I guess they shrink a bit.
If you need to replace the roof the guy that does it should be able to readjust the roof frame before recovering it.

coach420 Oct 29th, 01, 02:09 PM I went through 3 sets of wipers from Ricks and returned them all. I'm on my second set of wiper blades from Year One and they both hit the chrome trim. It sounds like I'm not the only one with this problem. Do you know a supplier that knows what they are selling?
It's good to hear that it can't be the windshield. That would have been a job to avoid.
tples69 Oct 29th, 01, 03:45 PM Hey guys I bought mine from D&R here in Chicagoland and got the right ones the first time...
Good luck,

Franken122 Nov 6th, 01, 08:45 PM Coach,
I've still got orig blades on my 67 rag (which is totally torn down now, so I can give you some specs.)
The blade tip to bottom edge of mount is 20.5 inches. The blade itself is 15 inches. I'll email you a pic. Both are same size.
As far as the gap, mine is/was on its second or third top...and it was tight too. If you let it sit down for a couple of days, it was a challenge. You should be able to compensate when you get a new lid, but I haven't gotten that far yet w/mine.
Hope this helps,
Jeff
lola68rag Nov 7th, 01, 05:03 AM why not just go to pep boys or autozone and get new wiper blades? that's easier than waiting for them in the mail and finding out they're the wrong ones. just get the universal 15" blades.
denverRS/SS Nov 7th, 01, 12:01 PM I agree with Lola, I replaced mine with some from NAPA and they fit perfect. If you have the wrong size, run back in and get the length that fits.
As far as the top fitting snug against the top of the windshield, is your weatherstrip in place? From the size of the gap, it sounds like it may not have the weatherstrip. There is a piece of weatherstrip that mounts to the top to seal out moisture. If the weather strip is there, I would suggest you take it to an unholstry shop to have it looked at. I believe there are lots of adjustments that can be made to the convertible top and it may be just a tweak or two to get it right.
69ragtop Nov 9th, 01, 05:55 AM It was my experience with the wiper blades on my car that it's not the wiper blades them selves but the wiper arms that are different the wiper blades for coupe and convt. are the same its the wiper arm thats shorter on the convert . I also had trouble getting the right ones but was able to clean up my original ones and put new blades on them worked out OK
