Hello,

I just purchased a original-looking blue light AM/FM radio from "radiosforoldcars.com"

I am going to put this in my 69 vert. There are no other speakers other then than the original center dash one. The maker of the radio suggests a triple cone but i don't know what that means.

Can somebody recommend the best speaker that i can put into that original spot ? After what i paid for the radio i am not going to try to save $30 on a speaker.

Thanks very much
Brian

Classic industries has a Kenwood dual front speaker that replaces original center dash speaker. $89 bucks.

Do you have the speaker mount bracket? The new dash speaker set ups are just 2 4" dual or triple cone speakers mounted side by side on a fiber board or aluminum plate. As said you can buy them from just about any of the 1st gen parts houses or do it yourself which is what I did since I already had the bracket. Go to Frys or best Buy or some place similar, buy the speakers, mount them on the bracket, install it in the dash, hook it up and go.

My dual cone speaker came with a bracket. Ordered it thru Firewheel. http://www.firewheelclassics.com/store/category.asp?CategoryID=9

When I made mine, they were too heavy for the stock speaker bracket, so I made one that fit the rear bracket mount and extended rearward to hook into one of the square holes in the dash. The hook was covered by the dash pad. I used 4.5" or 4.75" 3 way speakers.

are the $89.00 dual speakers that much better than the $30.00 ones?

If you could get a strong single cone speaker that will handle 100 amps, that should do the same as two. I used the dual and am finding one big one will work as most of my sound goes to rear. Treble in front and bass in rear. It will depend on your radio on how your speakers sound. Thats what I found out.

I built my own using two 4" speakers, a thin piece of wwood & the original bracket. It was a bit of a bear to get them in since my car has AC, but it came out pretty nice and sounds good.

The AC duct on mine interfered with one of the speakers by about 3/4". So I heated the duct with a heat gun, and used a can of the correct diameter to put a round indentation in it.

thanks for the posts, the company recommends a "full range" speaker as opposed to the dual cone ones. They say ( and i don't know anything about speakers and/or audio ) that because there is only one speaker going in the care, that it should be a full range so that there is some bass. They, again not me, say that the dual cones, won't provide the bass needed.
