View Full Version : Any One Use Mcleod Dual Disc Clutch
jd502 Mar 5th, 08, 02:57 PM I Have A 69 Camaro With A Doug Nash 5 Spd And A Blown Big Block About 750 Hp. I Had A Soft Lock Clutch That Did Not Last Very Long At All, Was Told It Was Not Good For Street, I Was Thinking Of A Dual Disc Setup? I Want Something To Hold Up Pretty Good At The Track And Be Good On The Street, Also I Dont Really Want To Have To Adjust It Alot. I Know I'm Asking For A Lot, Any Help Would Be Great Thanks Guys.
dharvey Mar 5th, 08, 03:38 PM i have a 67 BB with a jerico 4-speed and a soft -loc clutch also.it may not be the best set up for the street [ i do drive mine ] but i can live with it now that a run a lighter aluminum flywheel and installed 4:33 gears in the rear end.the trans has a 3:08 1st gear.a little slip at part throttle but when you bring up the revs and step off the clutch its like the clutch is welded to the flywheel..a buddy of mine has a dual-disc set up in his chevelle and is talking to mcleod about going to a soft loc.he goes thru discs.and it does not power shift like mine,i drove it,its not very clean at high RPMs.i also smoked a clutch and i added aluminum bolts for c/w.to lock up tighter at higher RPMs,same disc but works alot better.i had to add more base pressure to keep from slipping clutch too much on the street..your car sounds like its alot of fun to drive...denny
eville Mar 5th, 08, 04:40 PM love mine.
so far all street driven. Mark LW runs one too. He bangs gears at 7k.
dharvey Mar 5th, 08, 04:56 PM is this a small block or BB?torque does funny things to a clutch set-up..
ProdigyCustoms Mar 5th, 08, 05:02 PM I have replaced a pair Twin Disc in 2 different cars with 12" Dual Friction Centerforce in recent months. I also have had the dual disc clutch in Project Prodigy rebuilt after a few thousand miles.
I am a big Centerforce fan now and became a dealer after having some success. We are running these 12" units in a pair of all aluminum 572 CI / 750 HP / 700 TQ Bill Mitchell crate motors. Both cars killed the Mcleod clutches.
And the Centerforce is a hell of a lot less money
Mark .L.W. Mar 5th, 08, 05:51 PM The mcleod dual disc are great , i just order mine with the B&B plate and they seem to hold up great , they don't work well with the diaphram plate . I just changed my latest on over to a drive pin floater and went away from the strapped version , shifts even better now .
Mark.
dharvey Mar 5th, 08, 06:25 PM have you guys tried drag tires with the dual disc set up or are you running street tires ?with slicks and high RPM launch will that clutch dead hook a car or melt the clutch ?i am not in love with my soft-loc,but driving on drag tires and using the car for what i built it for, mcleod said the jerico would work better with it..my car is more drag then pro/street or P/T...denny,
jd502 Mar 5th, 08, 07:05 PM I DRIVE MY CAR HARD ON THE STREET AND TRACK, I NEVER GOT DOWN THE TRACK WITH OUT IT SLIPPIN , A COUPLE TIMES BANGED REV LIMITER, NOW IT IS FRIED, CAR HAS WENT 10.80'S AT 137MPH 2.1 60FT.
MINI TUBBED IT GOT A 1.48 60 FT SMOKED CLUTCH IN THIRD GEAR:mad:
CAR HAS A BLOWN 502 WITH HEAD WORK FULL ROLLER SHOULD GO WELL INTO THE 9'S IF I EVER GET THE CLUTCH FIGURED OUT. THERE IS A CHANCE I HAD THE CLUTCH ADJUSTED WRONG, I DONT REMEMBER HOW IT WAS SET UP, I PUT IT AWAY LAST YEAR PISSED OFF AND FORGOT ABOUT IT. I HAVE USED CENTER FORCE ABOUT 2 A SUMMER!

Denny,
I talked to McLeod at the PRI show a couple of years ago about the twin and he basically told me that if I sidestepped the clutch at 7000 rpm, I would break something and it would not be the clutch. Dont know how true that is, but I was planning to put the street twin behind my small block with a Nash 5 speed. Hope to have it on the road this summer so I best decide on a clutch pretty soon :)
sc68z28 Mar 5th, 08, 09:03 PM if I sidestepped the clutch at 7000 rpm, I would break something and it would not be the clutch.)
TRUE.
I broke my 9" rear gear two times with a McLeod Street-twin:sad:
A 1.48 60 FT SMOKED CLUTCH IN THIRD GEAR:mad:
Your clutch was NOT properly set up/adjusted.
have you guys tried drag tires with the dual disc set up or are you running street tires ?with slicks and high RPM launch will that clutch dead hook a car or melt the clutch ?
With Drag radials and a Street-twin, I blew the tires off. Clutch hit way to hard, 2.3 60 foot. (4000 rpm launch)
With slicks and the Street-twin, killed the rear gears. Again hits to hard, but with a little extra air in the slicks, tires spun just a little. I could leave without breaking stuff, 1.55 60 foot. (4200 rpm launch)
The best clutch I have found since then is from Rob @ Advanced Clutches
http://www.advancedclutches.com/
I have his 7", 2 disc, adjustable, weighs 19 lbs with the aluminum flywheel.
He built the clutch to my cars weight, HP, torque, shift rpm, launch rpm. He installs the counter weights needed and tells you how many turns to put in it. You get his cell phone number to call any time for tech help from the guy that made your clutch:yes: How cool is that 24/7 support. Then after a couple break in passes, I'm seeing 1.38 sixtys, no more broken parts :hurray:.

ProdigyCustoms Mar 6th, 08, 03:48 AM Thanks for that information Bill. My personal experiance with small clutches has not been great. A friend of mine swaped a million dollar baby clutch out of his car and made all the difference in the world. But another friend with a super high profile car used a carbon mini clutch and said it was heaven.
Also, another area of concern on the street is clutch weight. Yes a lightweigh flywheel / clutch package will spin RPMS like crazy, but you also loose torque too! Sometimes a bigger heavier clutch can help a street car be more "friendly" to drive in areas like leaving stoplights, normal stop, light leaves.
JD502. Are you saying you used a Centerforce in this car already? If so was it a 11" or a 12"? Huge difference in clamping power.
RickD Mar 6th, 08, 05:56 AM I have had good luck in the past with CF 11" setups but no CF 12" experience. I currently have a McLeod 12" setup and love it. Frank - have you experienced the McLeod 12"?

Frank, yes I agree, what works well for some, is not allways right for all.
Mine sees limited street duty, only a few hundred miles a year. My 3.25:1 first gear helps too. For me a light weight clutch package works, so far.
Don't get me wrong on the McLeod Street-twin (and other heavier clutches) they are great "STREET" clutches. I actually liked my Street-twin, on the street. If you go to the track often be prepared to spin the tires or break something.
JMHO.

jd502 Mar 6th, 08, 03:34 PM I Used A 11" Cf Clutch With A Super T-10, Bill My Soft Lock Set Up Was Around 1200.00 How Much Do You Think I Will Be Into One From Advanced Clutched? Also I Only Really Go To The Track About 10 Times A Year The Rest Is On The Street To Shows Or Cruisin About 200 Miles A Year. I Run A Aluminum Flywheel And A 28x 12.5 M/t Drag Radial.
ProdigyCustoms Mar 6th, 08, 04:03 PM Well, the 11" is only rated at 500 LBS Tq, with a light metal disc the 11" is rated at 575 Tq. The 12" is rated at 700. You were smoking the 11" because it was the wrong clutch. However with a blower big block capable of 9s, you must be making north of 750HP, so you may smoke a 12", however I would try one if it was mine.
Cool thing is you can try a 12" dual friction clutch for $350, the others will be $1000 dollar experiments. Although you may have to do a flywheel also for the 12" clutch depending on what you already have.
jd502 Mar 6th, 08, 07:05 PM frank i forget what fly wheel i have i put an aluminum one in when i put the soft lock in. if i need a fly wheel what would you recommend.
jd502 Mar 6th, 08, 07:07 PM ALSO MY LAST CLUTCH EXPERIMENT WAS WELL OVER A GRAND:mad: 350.00 SOUNDS GOOD. I'M STARTING TO THINK I SHOULD OF PUT A 400 IN IT.
ProdigyCustoms Mar 6th, 08, 08:36 PM Centerforce make a aluminum wheel with a 12" insert for the 12" clutch. It is 600. The billet 168 wheel will use the clutch and is half the price
sc68z28 Mar 6th, 08, 09:02 PM Bill My Soft Lock Set Up Was Around 1200.00 How Much Do You Think I Will Be Into One From Advanced Clutched?
JD, Rob can rework/customize your Soft-Lock for you. He has developed a program to determine what your car needs.
Email your specs to him here http://www.advancedclutches.com/contactus.htm
Then call Rob for his recommendation. Depending on what your clutch needs, will determine the price. He may recommend different springs, thicker heatshields, disc size, disc type, lever angle change, who knows? Or maybe a hole new clutch?? It's free to get a quote, I'd start there.
My 2 disc was a little under $3K. I realize most people are choking right know. I see it like this, got $17K in the engine, $6K in the trans, why not connect the dots with the best clutch I can. Also the Street-twin cost me more in broken parts than the new $3K Advanced Clutch.
Remember nobody said running a full bodied, stick shift, street car, deep into the 9's was going to be cheap.
OBTW I don't think any of the 9 second automatic cars run generic $300 torque converters either.:noway:

I KNOW ITS NOT GOING TO BE CHEAP, JUST GETTING FRUSTRATED WITH THE CLUTCH PROBLEMS I'VE HAD. I DONT THINK THE SOFT LOCK IS GENERIC THOUGH.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I understand you are just looking for answers.
The Soft-Lock is a great dragrace clutch and can be used on the street as well. It just needs to be set up correctly. I was looking at buying one and sending it to Rob for tweaks/setup, ended up with his custom unit instead.
What I'm suggesting is, you already have the Soft-Lock, and it probably needs freshening up. Call Rob and see what he thinks he can do with it (208) 880-6214 .
Also a good site for stick shift, street strip cars http://www.umtrnorth.com/forums/default.asp
There is a lot of good clutch and tranny talk there.

jd502 Mar 7th, 08, 05:55 PM BILL I KNOW WHAT YOUR SAYING, I'M GOING TO CALL HIM, THE WAY I YOU MAKE A REAL GOOD PIONT ABOUT THE MONEY WE SPEND ON THE MOTOR TRANS AND REAR, AND FORGET ABOUT THE LITTLE STUFF. THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP I REALLY APPRECIATE IT:thumbsup:
