View Full Version : Muncie vs. Hurst Shifter
IDS_Bill Mar 8th, 08, 10:34 PM Hey Everyone,
I will have an M21 in my Camaro and I am trying to decide on the shifter. What are the pros ans cons of the Muncie vs. the Hurst?
Thanks,
Bill
P.S. It is a console car...
pdq67 Mar 8th, 08, 11:07 PM I flat don't know what shifter your car came stock with??
But my early '66, '67 350SS/RS car came w/ a stamped Muncie and I have always liked it.
Please do a search for my "Snoopy Art" to see how I adjusted mine so that it leads 2nd gear into 3rd!

JimM Mar 9th, 08, 06:53 AM With the muncie shifter rubber mounted to the crossmember and the engine also rubber mounted, strange things tend to happen on high rpm gearshifts.
The hurst shifter is solidly mounted to the transmission, and will move with it as torque is released and reapplied on a gearshift.
69camaro1 Mar 9th, 08, 07:17 AM Jim is right about wierd things happening with the muncie shifters. The shift levers of reverse and 1-2 tend to bind up when going from reverse to 1st or 2nd. Hurst shifters are much easier to set up as they don't have body mounts and if adjusted well they will work flawlessly for a long time.
SixtyAte Mar 9th, 08, 07:56 AM I have the Hurst shifter also. Every car I had, needed to have the Hurst! I think they are a rock solid shifter and made to be abused. I haven't had one fail in 40 years.

gro51 Mar 9th, 08, 09:24 AM Basicly, the HURST performs much better.
If you wan't originality, go with the MUNCIE.

Agree...just installed a Muncie after having Hurst for 20+ yrs...Hurst shifts better but Muncie performs better than I anticipated.
No high speed shifts for my resto however. No traction bars, new paint and 4 ply nylon tires!

You could do it!
At least once :)...

Stocker Shocker 1967 z28 Mar 9th, 08, 06:29 PM Go to the G-Force web site. I just purchased a shifter for my muncie trans. They are awsome with or without a console. You will never buy another hurst shifter GUARANTEED! good luck
thewebb1 Mar 9th, 08, 06:55 PM Shocker, Is that gforcetransmission.com. What is awesome about them. Which part # is for a 67
chops Mar 9th, 08, 06:56 PM I have first hand experience the Hurst shifter will survive a total car fire loss.
Badbird Mar 9th, 08, 07:10 PM Fudge those silly mounted Muncie shifters, they make no sense!!.....I've been running Hurst shifters in my muscle cars for 35 years and never had a shifter related problem!.....I'm currently running a Hurst "Competition Plus" shifter in my 68 coupe, equipped with a console, which is still available, special order, for specific applications.....The Hurst shifters are rigidly mounted directly to the tranny, which makes shifter bind a thing of the past, unless you go with a clowny Muncie shifter!
68zproject Mar 9th, 08, 09:55 PM Never had a problem with my Muncie shifter.
neverendingproject69 Mar 9th, 08, 10:11 PM I love my Hurst Competition Plus shifter, It's like a hot knife through butter.
I have never shifted a Muncie shifter so I have no comparison

Hey Shocker, I found the website... did you get one of these?
http://www.gforcetransmissions.com/shifter_4speeds.asp
Does it work good? Better than a Hurst? I've got a Comp/Plus right now, but have been wondering if there were other choices out there. I'd love to find a good shifter with a bit of a shorter throw (without having to make custom linkages or something).

Stocker Shocker 1967 z28 Mar 10th, 08, 08:34 PM Yes, that is the website, if not try gforceshifters.com. The parts they use to make them are professional. They use hymends rods are larger in diameter. They can put the shifter any where you need it if you have a console. Ask for Nick, he builds alot of the shifters. The shi9fters they make are well worth the money. good luck
