I have the original 2-barrel (unlikely ever rebuilt) on the 327/210hp. Car has ran fine for a year and continues to run great, but recently a real strong gas smell started. I finally figured out that it was coming from the exhaust pipes. Pretty much pure gas dripping out forming a small pool on the ground, when running.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I believe that means one of the cylinders isn't getting a spark.

I would put a bucket under there because that sh#*'s to expensive to run on the ground...

you sure it isnt water your seeing?
gas would certainly ignite on is way down the exhaust from the heat.
(water drops are common at startup )

figure any fuel issue out before driving it anymore. I would think its condensation as the others have said and you have a problem with your gas filler neck but you seemed sure gas is coming out of the pipes (both sides?) so I would have somebody check it:confused:

Pull your dip stick and smell for gas. If gas is pouring into the engine, you need to correct the problem and change the oil asap ! Disconnect the fuel line from the carb and route it into a gas can away from the engine. Crank the engine and check for spark at each cylinder. Check the carburator for sticking float.

ya dont wanna wash the cylinder bores down with gas because youll be doing a rebuild before too long

Well here is what I found out so far. I read an old post from 2001 and a member's car was smelling up his whole garage. This is what was happening to me. He found that his gas cap wasnt on tight. I went out in the garage and sure enough my cap was on a little crooked (old cap and takes couple trys to get it on tight) and I smelled next to it and diffinantly strong gas smell coming from it (I know big suprise). Woke up this morning and sure enough no more gas smell in garage.

What it doesnt explain is why condensation (that wreaks of gas?) is coming out of exhaust pipes. I checked all the plugs and they are bone dry, so im burning the fuel. Maybe I was just chasing, while trying to figure out strong smell (gas cap). I assume condensation is going to have a strong gas smell(right?) and I figured that was problem. I smelled dip stick and not to strong of oder, rubbed the oil in my fingers and gave off moderate smell of gas. So I dont know what is going on. Maybe im losing my mind.

I will drive a little more and see if have same smells. Im not real confident this is over yet though. Love these old cars, always something going on:)

It appears you like smelling stuff dude!.....If you like the smell of cheese popcorn, I'll give you a pair of my old socks to smell!!:yes: hehehe:D.....No, but seriously, there's no way gasoline can travel out the exhaust manifold and make it's way all the way down the exhaust system and land, in a puddle, out the tail pipes!....I ain't never, ever heard of this!.....What you're seeing, and I don't mean smelling:D, is water condensation from within the exhaust system.....In addition to changing out the gas cap, due to gas smell:D, you should also check the vent lines to make sure you have no missing or cracked lines or rubber hoses:yes:.....And no, you're not losing you're mind, you're just gaining your sense of smell!:yes::D:hurray:

He did say that he smelled a slight odor of gas when he rubbed the oil on his fingures. You shouldn't smell any odor of gas in the oil at all. Gas in the oil and in the combustion chambers will wash the oil off the walls and cause scoring of the walls. You need to make absolute sure that there is no gas in the oil AT ALL.

Thanks guys, I will change the oil and start from scratch. If I get gas smell from oil then, I will know I havent fixed anything. (we did reset idle/mixure screws)
