Dave, Your welcome and I`m glad you figured it out. It took me a while too. Here is some pictures of my 69 prostreet. I have had this car for 27 years and it has went thru many stages. It was a daily driver for 10 years before I turned it into a prostreet car.I paid 1800.00 for it in 1981. It was a 307, powerglide, 10 bolt, A/C car. I wish I had A/C now. Some pictures are older and some are newer. As you guys say we never stop working on them.

I second that and they don't have to be just Camaro's it can be a Gremlin long as it has fat tire and big power or for that matter it can be a 4 cylinder....I was watching the 07 SEMA clips and there was a for cylinder going 7 flats....

Nice rides guys... Here's mine. I don't have any great pictures. I've posted these before. The car isn't completed yet but I should have it finished up this spring. And, NO, it's not (never was) a real Z11. Most of the specs are in my sig. I've replaced the upper arms with tubular units since that last picrture was taken.

David, Your car is looking great. I bet you cant wait to drive it. I like your valve covers. It looks better with the spark plugs attached to the valve covers. Have you thought about running your spark plug wires under the headers. That is what I did but I have burnt a couple of wires. I just found some red wire protectors that I am going to put on my wires and see how that works.

How did you run them under the headers I had a hard time getting them the way they are.If I would have ran them from new with these valve covers it probably would have been easier. They were already cut to lenght so it is what it is.It had to be pretty hard to get them under the headers I bet....

I ran them behind the heads and used ty-raps to hold them together. They are seperated like the nascar guys do. Then cut them to fit and away from the headers.

Drivers side and all you see is the valve covers. Also makes removing the valve cover easy.

I've actually owned the car for a few years, but I've had two children in that time that put everything on hold. So a while back I decided to get back on it since the kids are 3 1/2 and 2 now (a little more free time). I've gotten alot done to the car, but both kids enjoy being around racing and car shows so I figured I needed to change directions and build my other Camaro so the family can enjoy going together. So this car is gonna go into storage again :( or I may sell it to make some space for now. Thanks for the comment.

Thanks for the compliments on my ride

So I got over to my buddy's today and we got the 69 Fired up with the new fuel pump. Brought along my Camera:

http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r167/jwamod/Z28/HPIM0547a.jpg

Took it for a spin. This 69 is a MONSTER. I have ridden in fast blower cars and this girl put those things to shame. I am beginning to believe the past owner wasn't joshing about the 996hp on the dyno  Unfortunately on the second trip out we dropped the belt on the water pump. Got her shut down before she broke anything (did spill some coolant). Cell phones are great thing to have and our "pit truck" was on scene quickly. :) I took these next 2 pics while we waited:

While fiddling with my dig camera I tried the vid option. The following is what I got but the car's sound overpowered the mike so the audio sucked:

As quick as this car is there is also a dual stage nitrous setup. I think my buddy is gonna have to break out the bowling ball bag size cajones to work that into a run :D This is the first car that has ever put me back in the seat so violently that I unconsciously grabbed something to hold onto  It got me fired up about mine now, I gotta get her on the road SOON.

I am running a Aerospace Components fuel pump on my blower motor. It is the Ultra 350 Fuel Pump. I had problems with there fuel pump regulators. I went thru 2 of them and ended up with a Product Engineering 4 port regulator.

On my 406 that I had before the 502 I ran a BG hotrod 220 pump. But after about 5 years it started leaking. I had it rebuilt then a few years later it started leaking again. It is sitting in the garage. Hell I replaced it with a holley blue pump and could not tell the difference between the 2 pumps. 75 bucks compared to 300 bucks. Go figure.

Got the gauges picked out I think. Today I downloaded the ones I want off the net, sized em' to the specs on the site & printed the faces out on the printer. Then I cut some PVC gauge housings on the CNC. They are a little deeper than the actual gauges but that'll insure I have ample room for the real deals down the road. The 5" tach & speedometer might or might not work. Might have to downsize to the smaller ones, but I want to try & get these in there if possible. Old geezers need big numberz'. Now I can make a bezel. That outta' keep me busy for awhile.

Haven't gotten that far yet. When the time comes to build the engine I plan to have Steve Morris do the building. I've been going by his suggestions as I buy parts to do the mock up. I don't mind freshening it up later on but since this is my first pro charger engine I think I'll let somebody with experience do the initial build. It'll have in the neighborhood of 1,500 hp.

Mike,

I called Larry Hodge this morning to order the Billet Specialties wheels. He was very knowledgeable, and lucky for me, he knew the wheels would not clear my rear calipers. It seems the wheels have a 13 inch diameter "barrel" that will not clear the Wilwood calipers when using a 4.5 backspace wheel. Your calipers will be no prob, but if you ever replace them, you may want to be sure they will clear. He said the clearance problem was only with the Wilwood brakes, and that using a 3.5 inch backspace wheel would be possible. As my car is already built, I'm unable to use the 3.5.

I ordered the Mickey Thompson wheels from him.

Jerry,

I never thought about the rims hitting the calipers. I thought since they were 11" rotors on the back there would be no issues. I guess when I change the back brakes I will find out. I was planning on mounting the tires on the rims when I get home. I may call Larry monday and talk to him about the calipers. Thanks for the info.

Mike

rat3j396
Apr 6th, 08, 07:20 PM
Mike,

Larry said the problem is unique to the Wilwood brakes. Other aftermarket calipers are not as "tall" as the Wilwood. I would have bought the Billet Specialties wheels if I didn't already have the Wilwoods. Basically, he said measure the radius from the center of the axle to the farthest part of the caliper. With the main "barrel" (as he referred) of the wheel being 13" diameter, the caliper clearance became an issue.

I just posted in case anyone (including yourself) was contemplating buying the wheels while already having the Wilwoods. Larry saved me a lot of hassle and probably money, as I would have mounted tires on the wheels before fitment.

I can't wait to see your Camaro with the new wheels!

I ran into the same issues trying to get Wilwood calipers/brackets to fit my rims.

Got a pattern for the bezel set-up on the computer. I cut vinyl patters to tweak it 'til it fit. Cut a PVC blank for a final fit and now I'm cuttin' away on the aluminum bezel. I'm putting over sized (for this dash) gauges in it, so there's going to be some modifying to do to the fiberglass dash cover. The gauge bezel will be bolted to the chassis & the fiberglass cover will be removable for wiring access.

Hi David,

I learned a lesson here...I sold my Centerlines to a friend before I knew of the issues with the Billet Specialties wheels not fitting my car. I'm sure I could get them back, but I'm ready for a change.

I really like the M/T "ET Drag" wheels, but, like Alumistar 2 wheels, the front and rear wheels differ in appearance, I would guess for structural integrity with the wide rear wheel.

Here are links to see the M/T wheels. I'll post pics of them on the car, hopefully on the 16th when I get back to Texas.

I've been trying to cram mine under the dash. Hard to do with A/C. I hadn't heard heat being a problem, most failures i've seen from those boxes was vibration. (I see you have the dampers its sitting on which is good)

I don't know that the 6A and smaller boxes are much of a problem. It's the 7A & larger that produce more heat.

Did you ever receive your wheels?

prostreet69camaro
Apr 15th, 08, 06:16 PM
Jerry,

Yes I got the wheels. I got the front runners saturday and I have the back tires also. I ordered the brakes and master cylinder. They should be here in 2 weeks. I go offshore in a week and when I get back I will be installing the brakes and tires. Then I will post some pictures. Stay tuned. I will email you some pictures.

Those wheels are next on my list after the engine returns from "The Clinic" which should be very soon. I'll bet they are gonna look awesome on your car Mike, especially with the addition of that billet grille.

I decided to make a section of the bezel to see how it bent in the brake. The pic. below doesn't show how bad it looked when I pulled it out. (I made some alterations on the brake & bent it a second time and it straightened out some). I flipped the last 5 fingers over so they would come up short of the edge. Then I made a roll edge by putting a radius on the edge of a 1/2" aluminum plate. I tried it that way for the first test that distorted the raised edges & the thin center caved in because there was no support.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/pro70z28/04c61b40.jpg
I had a pc. of c-channel laying around so I bolted it to the brake to make a wider edge. Then I put a couple bolts in the 1/2 aluminum plate so I could put the brake fingers right at the edge w/o it slipping off. Then I made a filler pc. out of aluminum to wedge under the 1/2 plate to support the machined out center area of the bezel. The second test pc. bent perfect. Got a few things to finish on the dash cover & then it's time to bend the real deal.

Your rims look great. They look alot better than the old centerines you had. You need to call me so I can tell you how to put the bigger pictures on here. I am home till next tuesday. Also did you get the flier on the 3 day show at Lake Sommerville in june. I am going to it and if you can go I would like to meet you. You need to get the car ready.

Got 'er bent tonight. Got it roughed into the dash cover. Still rough but close enough that I know it will fit. The right wing is 1/2" longer than the left wing, so angles are different. I think I got it purdy' close though. Next is to cut the contour in the fiberglass for the oversized tach & speedo.

The rear wheels are 15 x 15 with M/T Sportsman Pros 33 x 21.5 x 15.

Mike, I'll try to make that show in June. My daughter is getting married that month, but I'm not sure of the date. I'll find out. I'm also probably going to go on the Houston / North Tx Camaro club get-together May 3 in Centerville. We've got around 15 1st gen Camaros signed up right now. I wish you could make it. I'll get with you on the photo posting. These will go to full screen if you click on them.

Hey thanks guys...got a little busy with work. Vette was pro streeted in the late 80's by John's Racecraft of Brockton Ma. when I worked there. Started life as a street car with a blown small block, it was then converted over to a drag car with the 502 big block with alum heads and a 1050 dominator. Best ET was a 10.97 at 127mph around 7 years ago. Racing got too expensive and decided to convert it back to the street. Haven't got it out yet that's why there's no mufflers yet. This is the big brother of my 69' Z that I purchased 2 years ago.

Got a little further on the dash today. I made plugs out of PVC to form the gauge wells, since these gauges are too big for the original bezel opening.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/pro70z28/Dash14-19-08.jpg
I did the kitty hair "form the bezel to the dash deal" again. Used vinyl & spray Pam as a release agent.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/pro70z28/Dash24-19-08.jpg
One last big hurtle for me. TIG welding on the bezel w/o ruining it. I welded some strap aluminum to the top & bottom to stiffen up the bezel & to provide a place for rubber mounting grommets.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/pro70z28/Dash34-19-08.jpg
Got the bezel just setting in place. It's being held in by the dash bar. Close enough to see what it'll look like.

Dave,

I took another look at the photo albums of your '69. That is a super nice car! The attention to detail is remarkable. I wish I had half the skill as you guys!

There are manufacturers of low profile air cleaner assemblies, or look at K & N filter elements. Sometimes you can find an element that will reduce the overall height of the cleaner. Try Billet Specialties for low profile assemblies. good luck

I will drive it this Saturday to the Christian Classic Cruisers show in the north D/FW area. It's about 30 miles one way, so I'll see how roadworthy it is (insured ). They usually have around 250 - 300 cars there.

I still need to change out this Powerglide. The 5000 stall convertor isn't going to work with this motor very well. I have a TH400 with a 3000 stall convertor, but I may just go with a 700R from Phoenix Transmissions. Any opinions on that?

I have a TH400 in my Camaro and I like it. The 700R is also a good trans for cruisin'(overdrive). Never dealt with one but I think you would be looking at having to either modify your shifter or purchase another one for the 700R,not sure about that.

Jerry,

I would not use the 700r4 transmission. It will not hold up behind that blower motor. I have several friends who have tried them with no luck and spent big bucks. My buddy also bought one from Bowtie Overdrives and it didnt last behind a 383. I would go with a turbo 400. That is what I have and have had no problems. I did buy a high dollar convertor for it, Its either a Coan or Hughes and a 2500 stall. Works great with a 389 gear and 33 inch tall tires. I love it on the highway now. I used to have 513 gears in it. I can go 3000 rpm and cruise @ 75/80 mph.

Mike,

Thanks for the input. I have a fresh TH400 with a 3000 stall Art Carr convertor. I guess I should at least use it since I have it. Another friend suggested the TH400 and a Gear Vendors overdrive. He had one in a 70 Judge, and he said that's the way to go. Too bad they're about $3k.

I'll use the powerglide this weekend and swap the TH400 in next week. I have 4.56 gears, but with the 33 inch tall tire it brings it down a bit. Right now the car is at 3000 rpm at around 60 mph.

I wanted to build another 69 Camaro -- and one that was more of a driver where I could feel confident that I could drive it to Ocean City and back -- the Nova ran great, but those big meats on the back and a long highway drive didn't thrill me :noway:

Looks great Dave!! When the area surrounding the center of the grille is painted the body color it seems to add more depth to the front end. Unpainted tends to give it a flatter look. Trust me,you'll be glad you painted that grille:yes:

They don't go anywhere. The list of threads is determined by your user settings that give a time frame on how far back to list. In userCP you can change the setting on how far back to look. You can also look farther back by using the settings at the bottom of each main forum page. Also in UserCP you can look back 300 of your own posts on your subscription list too.

Thanks for the positive comments. The car is primarily for racing but occasionally makes it to the cruise in. Its no where near as nice as most of the cars I have seen posted here. I am currently trying to get insurance on it as I was recenly dropped my State Farm because of the "modifications". There are not too many cruise-ins near by. I live near lake erie on the north end of the state and the car has a 5 gallon fuel cell and it goes through ethanol way too fast ;-).

Time for a larger fuel cell. What kind of numbers does your Camaro run? You might want to check with a few of the specialty insurance places they don't mind if you have a blower, roll cage, etc...

Mike,
I have insurance with a company called Classic Automobile Insurance Inc. my yearly premium is just over $450 a year. At the time I was ready to insure my car, Haggerty would not insure Pro Street vehicles:(. Would Haggerty be competetive in pricing compared to my company?

I have my car insured for 50K and it is a little over $700.00 a year. I have modified insurance with the roll bar and blower motor. I had to sign a clause that I would not race it. My deal is if I race it and something happens then I will fix it.

I just talked to my insurance guy and he said Haggerty was insuring cars without pictures and you tell them how much you wanted to insure it for. I had to send pictures but that was 3 years ago.

I had it insured for 25k and it was $320.00 a year but it wasnt with Haggerty. I think they are all going to be pretty competitive.

The problem is we have to get modified insurance.

Yes,
It's the same company. I 've got an agreed policy with them for $45K. It's basically the same provisions as prostreet69camaro's policy. It's not covered when it's on the track(which isn't very often) so any repairs due to an on track incident would be my responsibility.
