View Full Version : '69 Heater Control Issue
Tim_D Mar 9th, 08, 02:29 PM Hello -
I'm currently assisting a friend with his '69 A/C car. We're working on replacing a seized heater control switch, and are doing the cables at the same time.
We're having issues with the center lever (A/C control). The cable of this lever attaches to the heater box and actuates the main damper that selects between heat and A/C. Problem is, the damper won't move - it's seemingly "blocked" in the position where the door is closest to the firewall.
This damper door seems to be linked (bolted) to another door that I can't quite see it's function. This second door is the part that doesn't seem to want to move - it only pivots about 5 degrees total, and seems to be obstructing the main damper door.
Does anyone have any clue what I am talking about from this description? If yes, any ideas what may be preventing the second door from rotating?

Daral Mar 10th, 08, 01:32 PM I know exactly what you are talking about. I had the same basic problem. In my case, it was a mouse nest that prevented the doors from opening and closing. You may need to pull the heater box to see what is going on.

So, what you're calling the "mouse nest" is what I'm referring to as the "second door that only pivots about 5 degrees"?
What was wrong with yours?
Thanks -

parkbrau Mar 11th, 08, 05:56 AM Tim, Did you lube the cables real good? As old as they are they get gunked up inside and lubeing them helps out.
I cant relate to what your talking about on the door. The assembly manual has some pretty good pics of all the box.

I believe that what Daral is talking about is an ACTUAL mouse nest ... Not a cute name for something else, but the real thing ... a real mouse nest blocking the vent.
When I was working on my '68 Chevelle, I had mice in the car when I picked it up. There were mice nest all over the place, the heater box was a favorite place for them.

Excellent.
Yes, re-reading it I see that now.

Yes, these are brand new, lubed cables. It's that secondary door that won't move. It feels like something mechanically won't allow it to pivot - like it's hitting something hard... Almost feels like it's not supposed to pivot, but that can't be right. The selector lever currently only moves 1/4", and the range should be the entire length of the controller (~ 4").
Just a thought, is there something in the heater box that may be vacuum actuated, that would move if the engine were running, allowing that second door to pivot?

Daral Mar 11th, 08, 07:48 AM Yes, I am talking about an actualy mouse that built a nest in the heater box so the doors would not open and close. The nest was made out of my firewall pad so I guess I will be needing another one of those too. Once I cleaned it out and lubed up everything, it worked fine.
parkbrau Mar 11th, 08, 02:44 PM No nothing vacuum actuated.
