I am in the middle of a build and I am tryign to figure out a cam that will still work with pump gas

So far here is what i am working with.

010 block
4.030 Forged flat top pistons -5 cc relief
.005 in the hole
6" rods
Scat 9000 3.75 stroke crank
AFR 195 heads
Rockers to be determined
1" 3/4" dougs headers
.041 head gasket
(That should have a .046 quench)
Performer RPM intake (not sure if I will go air gap or not) OR Victor Jr. intake
Yet to determin Carb I will break it in with a Speed Demon Mechanical 650 carb (I am open to sugestions on carb size)

Two cams I am thinking about are the Solid Comp cam 294s or the Solid XS282S
I am totaly open

The car has a M-21 4 speed, 4.10 12 bolt and a 28" rear tire. Full interior.

What other cams might work? Due to the cast crank I would like to have max rpm around 6500 or less. I hav 92 and 93 octane readily available.

Thanks!
Eric

Has the block been decked? Are you building a 383?

It hasnt been Decked yet. Once I get the pistons and actualy measure yes it will be decked so that the pistons are .005 in the hole.

and yes It will become a 383.....

The heads are going to be the new 195s with 65 cc chambers, That should put it around 10.8 to 10.9 to one....

Thanks!

Dynamic Compression with the XS282S is 8.47:1
Static Compression with the XS282S is 10.8:1

This cam would be too much compression for pump gas in my opinion. A static compression of about 8:1 would be perfect for pump gas.

Dynamic Compression with the 294S is 8.05:1
Static Compression with the 294S is 10.8:1

The cam would be perfect for pump gas because the dynamic compression is right were it needs to be for pump gas.

Dyno of the motor built to your specs above. I assumed a free flowing 2.5" dual exhaust.

The new/current #s are with the XS282S and the last #s are with the 294S. Basically the same deal throughout the entire power band.

Going to a race style single plane (vic jr., super victor) and a 750 carb showed gains of right at 30 hp and about 10 ft lbs of torque.

THANKS ANDY!!

Any other manufacturers that may have a cam that would be good? I just so happen to have the comp catalog......

You might want to check out the NEW 30-30 Nostalgia plus. It is a remake of the old 30-30 with some new technology to it. I also like cams from Crower and Engle Cams.

Is there any particular reason you want a solid cam? I'm putting the comp XE284 hydraulic flat tappet in my 406 with AFR 195s and it makes relatively the same amount of power the solid cam does. Going to a hydraulic would eliminate having to lash the valves all the time. I would seriously consider putting a 750 on that 383. Your building a pretty stout motor, and it could make use of that extra 100 cfm. If you want to play around with different cam grinds, there is a dyno program on comps website made especially for cam choices. You plug all your variables in, and it spits out a list of cam grinds, from best choice to worse for your particular setup.

My intent is to get a 750 to 850 carb. I am really thinking about the 850 annular discharge Mighty Demon. But my wallet is holding me back! (my 650 is only about a year old) My thoughts are ratehr than skimp on whats a real PAIN to switch, deal with the smaller carb till fathers day.....

The only reason i am thinking solid is becuase I dont want any kind of valve float. I dont want to push the limits of the hydrolic cam. Eventualy I am going to spend the money and get a full roller cam.....but that is in the future.

THANKS!

I have the 282S and feel it is a little too small for my combo. I think you are on track with the two cam choices you are looking at. I will probably upgrade to the XE282S sometime this summer.

Imho, if you want a SOTA cam, then please hunt up UDHarold over at Team Chevelle!

He will spec both lifter type lifter cams that will be right for what you want!

As for alway's lashing a solid lifter cam, I generally checked mine when it got to sewing machining a schosh louder and it was usually after my second oil change so a couple a times a year as a daily driver way back then. No biggie at all to me.

I'm a solid lifter cam guy! BUT nowaday's you have to run GOOD OIL!!!!! And it's a good idea to install the hole-footed solid lifters!

Thats how I feel about solids....I really dont mind them. Good locks and good initial set up, they are not bad, and alot quicker to find a flat lobe......

I wish I could afford a roller set up, but I am really over budget now, just to get a good base. Anyone want to make donations? Its for a good cause! (spanking those cocky 5.0 mustangs na!)
