View Full Version : Need help choosing new stereo, speakers etc.
ck 2 Mar 13th, 08, 07:22 PM I have decided to install a new stereo in my 69. I think I'll mount it in the glovebox.
I am not looking for something to fill the trunk with amps and speakers. I want a decent unit that has a CD player. I want to put two speaker in the package tray and a couple in the dash, preferably where the original single speaker was.
I was hoping someone with more knowledge than me would recommend a stereo/speaker combo that would fit what I'm looking for. Also will I need a small amp?
Thanks
brendan 67 Mar 14th, 08, 03:34 AM Hi.Car audio depends alot on budget. For a basic system use a cd player from Alpine or Pioneer, probably a 4 channel amp from Alpine, somewhere around 4 x 50rms.Speakers in the parcel shelf could be 2x 6.5in coaxials or for a bit more bass 6x9s.I would'nt put the front speakers under the dash but in the kick panels. You could fit a 4in or 5.25 2 way component set there with a little bit of work.Id spend most of the budget on the front speakers and amp.Hope this helps.
ck 2 Mar 14th, 08, 05:59 AM Thanks. As for budget I don't want to tie up alot of money in a system. But I don't want to skimp and have junk. So I'm willing to spend what's necessary to have a good system to listen to while cruising. I'm just not interested in having a massive setup.
clwilcox33 Mar 14th, 08, 06:44 AM I highly suggest receivers with full speed ipod connections, like the Alpines have. You won't regret it when(not if) you get an ipod. Swear.
Unreal Mar 14th, 08, 08:52 AM What does full speed iPod connections mean?
I bought a CD player 6-7 years ago for my car (still in the box) I'm considering getting one with iPod connection, preferably including power supply/charging to the iPod.
clwilcox33 Mar 14th, 08, 11:06 AM A full speed IPod connection, is much faster, and will allow you to completely control your IPod from the receiver itself instead of from the IPod aux inputs or fm transmitter connectors, it will also charge the IPod through the connection, w/out having to use an additional plug/wire. I have a 60G Ipod that I have thousands of songs on that never leaves my truck, is hidden and I never have to touch it unless I want to update the music on it. I bought it with the sole purpose of using it instead of a cd changer in my vehicle. When I get a stereo for my Camaro, I'll be able to move my IPod between them.
CDs are obsolete.
Check out these. Alpine makes them Solely for the IPods and do not even have CD drives anymore:

Here's some that have CDs, even the cheapest $150 cda-9870 still has the full speed connection and you can see what your IPod is playing on your stereo and completely control it, even with the remote if the model you buy has one or you buy it extra:
http://www.alpine-usa.com/US-en/products/series-c.php?category=AV_HU
There are some other brands starting to use full speed connections, but Alpine was the first and has been perfecting it longer IMO.
ck 2 Mar 14th, 08, 02:17 PM Thanks for that info! I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to stereo stuff.
I think I'll look for an Alpine system like you are talking about. Then put two 6x9's in the back. Just not sure what size speakers to use up front and what size amp?
Anyone have a speaker and amp recommendation to go with this type stereo for me?
jenpopp Mar 14th, 08, 05:35 PM There is always 10 ways to skin a cat. If you are not looking for all out hearing loss, you could put two 3.5 in speakers where the original single speaker was you would have to fab a bracket. That is if you do not want to cut up your kickpanels. 6 x 9s in the package tray work nice. Also a good quality deck will be able to supply those 4 speakers with the power they need, without an amp . My two cents

Thanks. You're right, I don't want something that will blow the windows out. Just a good clean sound but not a Kraco either.
I definitely want one that has a built in FM tuner though. These things have gotton so sophisticated I can't even read the specs on them and tell the difference in what they come with and what you can add on.
I have looked at these two Alpines. CDE-9881 http://www.alpine-usa.com/US-en/products/product.php?model=CDE-9881
and CDA-9885 http://www.alpine-usa.com/US-en/products/product.php?model=CDA-9885.
Could someone with more knowledge than me look at these two and tell me the differences in them and if they would be a good choice?
Thanks.
Pro-Street69Camaro468 Mar 14th, 08, 06:18 PM I got $700 in mine and its to loud for me..It has 2 amps 1 for the sub and 1 for the four speakers and tweaters I mixed Directed and Kenwood and has a nice sound to it. Heres some pics of the stuff I made.. Just an option not for everyone...

Bowtie707 Mar 14th, 08, 09:59 PM I would Recomend that you put a Sony Reciever, and Alpine amp and pioneer speakers all around and with sony tweeters this will give you the best sound and clarity that you'll need to listen to your tunes trust me i have this setup in my 67 camaro and it sounds great when your crusing and best of all i only spent $500 on everything. If you want a loud boom i would suggest that you get a kicker subwoofer either a 10' or a 12' right in the center of the two 6x9's in the trunk this will give you a nice clean boom it it won't rattle your trunk as bad. For this you'll nedd two amps one for the speekers and one for the subwoofer. Hope This Helps.:o

They all have FM tuners, just some of the new ones don't have CD drives. The main differences between the 2 you're looking at (I think the 9881 is discontinued), is the 9885 comes with the remote, has double the preamp voltage and a better screen. Plus, from Crutchfield, if you buy the 9885, they're giving you the $30 ipod cable for free. Look at these comparisons on the models they carry that also play CDs.
http://www.crutchfield.com/S-K949xPAQvRO/cgi-bin/prodcomp.asp?g=300&compareitems=500CDA9883+500CDA9884+500CDA9885+500C DA9886+500CDA9887&hidesimilar=n
I think the 9886 is the better buy. Comes with the cable, an even better display, a USB port, and built in EQ for only $50 more. It's what I'd get if I was buying another right now and just had to have a CD player. Otherwise I'd buy one of the IDA (built specifically for Ipod) receivers (http://www.crutchfield.com/cgi-bin/ProdComp.asp?g=300&s=0&c=3&cc=01&compareItems=500IDAX300&compareItems=500IDAX200&compareItems=500IDAX001&compareItems=500IDAX100).
FYI, I've bought a lot of equipment from Crutchfield and they're great to work with and they're service advisors really know their stuff if you have to call them for advice.
ck 2 Mar 15th, 08, 12:47 PM Thanks for all the help. I see they are about $50 cheaper on Ebay. But you have to deal with the unknowns that come with Ebay.
ck 2 Mar 15th, 08, 02:54 PM Anyone care to recommend some 6x9's and 3.5's that they know are good speakers?
brendan 67 Mar 15th, 08, 04:37 PM Hi.The Alpine sps-609 6x9s would sound good and handle a good ammount of power if you decide to run an amp.I really dont think you will find any 3.5in speakers that will sound any good, and putting them next to each other in the middle of the dash isnt a great idea.Minimum size for me would be 5in components in the kickpanels. But depends if you want to work with them.Alot of people on here have done it so check it out. Both of those HUs you were looking at would work well.Hope this helps.
ck 2 Mar 15th, 08, 09:07 PM The problem with the front speakers is I don't want to cut up my kick panels. This is an A/C car. So I need to come up with something for the front speakers.
jenpopp Mar 15th, 08, 09:27 PM I am using all JL. 2 3.5s in the stock location. I was skeptical too about quality with them right together, but am impressed. 2 6x9s on the rear tray. kenwood excellon deck running them no amp.
3.5 tr350cxi
6x9 tr690txi
kenwood deck all for just over 500. I am sure prices vary per dealer.
clwilcox33 Mar 16th, 08, 08:34 AM Infinity and JL Audio for speakers are my favorites for high quality speakers. They aren't by any means top of the line competition speakers, but more than you'll ever need. After those, the Alpines speakers are nice too.
ck 2 Mar 16th, 08, 09:23 AM Okay another stupid question. What is the difference in 2 & 3 way speakers? Which would be the best?
Pro-Street69Camaro468 Mar 16th, 08, 09:33 AM Just something to keep in mind when you install front speakers and front speakers are a definate for the best sound, the triangle needs to be as equal as posible in the measurement from your head to the speakers this is why I put mine in the kicks,in the door its not as equal of a triangle at least this is what vmy buddy told me that owns a sterio shop....
ck 2 Mar 16th, 08, 07:18 PM Here are a couple 6x9's I'm looking at. What's your opinions on them for my setup?

Pretty good imformation why alot of people put speakers in kick panels. But i can understand why you dont want to cut them up.I bought a pair of repro panels so i didnt have to cut originals.Either of those 6x9s will be good but ask them if they are genuine jl audio. Most people going for a nice front setup will put 2 way in the rear just to make the sound a bit fuller.2 way is mid woofer and tweeter.3 way is mid woofer mid range and tweeter. You can see in the photos of the jls one is 2 speakers the other is 3.Hope this helps.
Arai Mar 17th, 08, 12:19 AM I just recently added some stereo stuff to my truck and was happy with this stuff. I didn't want to look like a gangster and be heard coming for 5 miles, but I wanted a nice crisp clean sound and thats exactly what I got. I wanted to control my ipod from my receiver and this stereo allows that. I still need to put a small 8" sub under my back seat for some mild bass, but my mids and highs are crystal clear.
Pioneer DEH P6900UB
Polk Audio db5251 componets
6x8's Polk 2 way in rear doors
small 1000 watt amp powering componets and 6x8's
still need a small amp and a small sub to finish it off

WV6TY7 Mar 17th, 08, 09:57 AM This is an interesting product if you wanted to mount the radio under the dash instead of hacking up the factory mounting hole.
http://www.crutchfield.com/S-iHGEj4L5zgJ/App/Product/Item/Main.aspx?i=120999000
I have also been debating if it is possible to mount a removeable faceplate on the opening and extend the contacts on the back via a cable to the trunk or glove box.
ck 2 Mar 17th, 08, 08:17 PM Thanks guys for all the good info! This really helps.
clwilcox33 Mar 18th, 08, 06:57 AM You're welcome! Let us know what you end up doing.
ck 2 Mar 18th, 08, 09:13 PM I bought the Alpine CDA-9886 today. I'll update when I finish.
