View Full Version : Price for headliner installtion????
mountainman Mar 14th, 08, 12:01 PM what's the cost to have a headliner installed ?? Labor wise ? I got a price of 300.00. No material.. just for him to install? sound fare? I live in upstate NY . Knowing that everything is more in this state. thanks for any input>
no69x-44 Mar 14th, 08, 12:20 PM I know that the headliner itself is not the big expense in this deal. The headliner is pretty cheap, the install ... not so much. Sounds like the quote you got is in the ball park.
69TAPoser Mar 14th, 08, 01:04 PM It literally took me over 15 hours to get mine right by myself (1st time). It was tough. For a pro, I have heard it takes 4-5 hours. I would think your price is not bad. Especially considering what it takes to do it yourself.
Where in Upsate are you?
I am from the Oswego/Baldwinsville areas, but currently living in NH.

4-5 hour's labor for a pro?????? I do them in 2 hour max.
And $300.00 for just labor is way too high, even in New York.
69TAPoser Mar 14th, 08, 02:33 PM Sounds like you should have Junior do it! 2 hours is amazing. It took me that long to thread the listings and put the bows in the car. :D

Unreal Mar 14th, 08, 02:39 PM I think I paid $150 about 4 years ago.
italiano362 Mar 14th, 08, 02:55 PM I paid 300.00 last fall for my 67.
Badbird Mar 14th, 08, 02:58 PM In the metro detroit michigan area, I've received labor quotes, for headliner install, between 2 and 2 1/2 bones, which is waaaaaaaay too high!!.....Why not just do it yourself man?.....You'd have plenty of bones left over to treat yourself to some beer or perhaps pizza or a nice steak dinner or whatever!.....I will, as soon as it gets a little warmer outdoors.....Matter of fact, I'm looking forward to doing this, having never done this before.....I'm thinking it'll probably take a few hours but certainly not 16!!....I'll be ordering the headliner kit, in the bedford grain, from NPD, probably next week, for 77 bones.
Pro-Street69Camaro468 Mar 14th, 08, 05:38 PM It cost me $300 the kid did a nice job it took him 3.5 hrs its not worth the aggravation to me crawling around up in there.I did one about ten years ago and broke my windshield so where did I save in that...I recommend if you have the windshield in let a pro do it.

A little trick on the bow's,I take a wire wheel attached to my grinder to them before I install them, then wipe them down with WD40.
Also on this subject,if you supply the headliner $125.00 labor,I supply the headliner and install $215.00.............

Thank you!....That's good advice on the cleaning of the bow's!.....I also heard that attaching all the screws for the various things that attach to the roof also makes it easier when it's comes to cutting.....Is this what you do?....By the way, that's an excellent labor price, there in MO!:thumbsup:

Yeah I put all the screw for the visor's,dome light and stuff back up before I install the headliner.
And that also work' swhen you are installing a carpet, put all your seat belt bolt's and seat mounting bolt's back in and it makes it a lot easier to find when your ready to cut the holes.
ck 2 Mar 15th, 08, 02:50 PM I just had mine installed last summer for $125. The shop where the guy who did mine works asked me $275. Long story short I got hooked up with him through a mutual friend and he did mine for $125 at his house. I told him what his boss quoted me and he said "yea and I would have been the one to do it and wouldn't have cleared $125." So we were both happy.
He also did my vinyl top for $125. So I had $250 in my top and headliner. I supplied both.

Mountainman -
I started my install, got concerned about how it would turn out, called a local place in Wayne County ($350 - Sorry, too much for me!) and decided that I would do it myself. After all - my car came with a new headliner kit in the truck - so if I screwed it up - I wasn't out anything. Go ahead and do it yourself. I researched this forum and spent about 6-7 hours and it came out very good.
A few tips I learned:
1 - Lay the headliner out on the blacktop in the sun and let it heat up.
2 - remove the bows and mark them front to rear. I wire wheeled them on the bench grinder. The tip about the WD40 is a great one.
3 - Install all screws - easier to locate after headliner is in - ask me how I know...
4 - I used brush on contact cement (Non-Flammable) - much easier than spray on.
5 - Take your time - You'll be fine!:hurray:
69CamaroRT Mar 15th, 08, 09:38 PM i paid $225 last spring to have mine installed, thats with me buying the material. there is an article on "how to" in the july 2007 chevy punch.
cad Mar 19th, 08, 11:20 AM I just finished mine March 8th in my 68. I had never done it. I recommend all the above. We didn't have any trouble getting the bows through the listings. We did take a fine file and smooth the very ends out and that was it.
I also recommend a second person holding the can of contact cement and a good shop light so they can watch how you are pulling to prevent "waves" in the fabric.
I cut a pop can up and used it for the cement since I had a quart, which is WAY too big to be trying to hold while inside your car.
Badbird Mar 19th, 08, 11:38 AM That is cool!....Having never done this, I'll be doing a headliner installation as soon as it gets warmer outdoors....I've read some dudes say that the front and rear glass has to be removed to do it right.....Was your glass installed?.....And how long did it take you to complete the installation?
