Hi, I have a 1992 Camaro RS that has power windows. The drivers side is half way open and will not close. Also, when I hold the switch, I hear a quiet whirring noise for about 5 seconds. I know that the motor or regulator needs replaced, but I'm not sure which one needs fixed. I called Autozone and they said they had the motor but not the regulator. How can I tell what needs replaced? Could I manually lift the window so my interior is not ruined? Please help, this is really pissing me off.

If i were you I would try to buy just the motor, but on my truck I had to buy the regulator that came with its own motor. You have to take your door panel off to get to your motor. If just putting a motor on it doesnt fix it you can take it back and get the assembly. You should be able to grab the window with both hands and pull up while someone else rolls the window up. Hope this helps.

There are a few basic problems I've encountered with power windows - none of which were on 1992 Camaros, but here goes...

On a few occations I've found problems with the motor itself. The commutator was fowled up, brushes worn down, and water inside. A clean and lube was good enough to get them going...at least until the irreplacable brushes wore out. GM has also be installing thermal breaker switches inside the motors that flake out. Symptoms are sluggish performance and the motor will eventually stall when the breaker pops. A few seconds later it works again but the cycle repeats. Soldering the breaker shut fixed the problem.

I've seen the pinion gear on the regulator shear off. An old pherd I owned shelled out the rubber coupling between the motor gear and the regulator pinion. Pherd offered a replacement fairly cheap.

Unfortunately it's hard to tell what the cause is until you have your door ripped apart. I was lucky enough to be able to return my $245 regulator motor for the 2002 Z, after a motor R&R fixed what was wrong with it.

yes, you can lift up the window and it should go up., My passenger side does the same thing, my guess would be the motor needs lubed or replaced .
