I want to paint my GM crate motor. It is black. I want it orange. Where should I start? I know it's going to need some form of prep before I hit it with a rattle can.
I ask this before in the middle of another thread and it didn't get much attention.
I could use some help now.
Thanks,

Morning Fred ,to get a brilliant orange you need to try to get the black off, try acetone ,or something that won't make a real mess ,the main thing if you don't get the black off is to Clean it very good….type off everything you don't want painted …you know all this so like I was saying the main thing is CLEAN …Riddle can or POR 15 ….have fun and Happy Motoring soon...I am leaving my new motor black(ZZ4 w/AFR heads) as I don't want to go through what you are going to be...I got plenty on the list already ...Good Luck

How old is the paint ?
Is the motor in the car ?
When I re-did mine it was out of the car and apart (rebuilding). I wire brushed everything I could and cleaned it with Brake Kleen. Taped it off and sprayed.

A crate mtr. shouldn't be too dirty. Put some paint prep solvent in a gun and
start spraying from top down. wipe dry with clean towels. blow dry. repeat if needed. Mask off bright parts and other as you wish. Spray with epoxy primer sealer. Spray with color. Use the best materials you can afford.

Dave,
I did the same thing as DOUG G did.... I used the scotch brite 2" sanding disks to remove the paint. I cleaned it with Isopropyl Alcohol. Then I brushed on POR engine enamel,,reduced. I waited until it has almost dried. Then I sprayed on the Chev orange with Creramic. It will take aprox 3 days to totally cure. Whan all said and done you can hit the block with a hammer and nothing will happen. You can see this in my Sig pics.
Good Luck with your project.

Agree with Joe on this one. The Dupli-color 1607 Chevy orange with ceramic is a great choice. Just sprayed my 400 block yesterday with it. Been using it over 10 years now and it's a great paint.

I'll look for the #1607 paint tomorrow. Sounds like it does a good job. I bought a can of Jasco paint remover today. I thought I would brush some on tomorrow. I've used it before to remove clearcoat from polished rims. It works real quick. It bubbles the paint up and you just wipe away. After words it can be cleaned with Berryman's or brake clean. Good thing I have a lot of rags and a lots of time. My headers won't be here for 2 more weeks.
I used Zep products paint remover in a spray can to find the axle codes on my old 10 bolt. After it set for about 30 seconds you could hear the paint bubbling from about 10 feet away. The paint actually fell in the floor on its own! Too bad we don't carry that stuff at work any more or I'd use it.
Wish me luck,

You really don't need to remove the black paint that is on it already. You're just asking for a ton of work that isnt necessary.
Make sure its free of grease/oil, then get after it with some red scotch brite pads by hand to scuff the black paint. Use a primer over the black because engine orange in a rattle doesnt cover very well.
