View Full Version : Where to get a budget short block
fredd7924 Mar 15th, 08, 09:20 PM when i assembled my 327 i did not replace the pistons, or rings, or bearings. Now it smokes heavily, knocks when you start it up, knocks under acceleration, and ticks under acceleration.
I replaced everything except for the block and rotating assembly and now i regret it. i have vortec heads, performer rpm intake, holley 600 carb, cc268 cam, headers, and new everything like water pump, oil pump etc. *not original engine*
I'm thinking i should just get a new 350 or 383 short block. any suggestions on where has a decent price, or any other ideas what i should do?

Greg O Mar 16th, 08, 10:04 AM I have done business a couple of times with www.revolutionaryperformance.com on rotating assemblies and had a great experience/ I also have heard good things about their short blocks. Give Darly White a shout. They appear to have a budget 383 short block for $1950.
I also have a friend that has a fresh 406 short block I think he is selling. Shoot me a PM if you are interested.
TJS69 Mar 16th, 08, 10:22 AM I have not done any business with these guys, just read about them in magazines etc. It looks like they have excellent prices. http://www.larrysperformance.com/
prostock Mar 16th, 08, 03:22 PM 383 or 406 is great, 406 w/vortec heads makes high comp so u have to be careful which pistons u get. easy to make 406 425hp w/dish piston.
fredd7924 Mar 16th, 08, 08:30 PM larrysperformance is exactly the type of place i was looking for. And they are within my budget!f now i just need to do a little research on cam selection and carbs. thanks guys

novaderrik Mar 16th, 08, 09:30 PM find a good local machine shop and build your own. it's not that hard or expensive to build a good shortblock.
opelitis Mar 22nd, 08, 04:43 PM Novaderrick hit it on the head.. Something goes wrong, yah don't have to ship the beast back to origin... If you buy locally, it'll give you a chance to git right in there and learn and ask questions that are pertinent to your build and satisfaction... Ask arround re. the most honest/customer friendly shop... Good Luck!!! T.
pdq67 Mar 22nd, 08, 08:02 PM I did this when i built my 406.
It was a BARE junkyard block that was in the cast metal pile and it took me about an hour to find it's main caps!
I had it cleaned, checked and bored locally and then I bought a PAW Master stock remanufactured and balanced rotating assembly that had TRW forged pistons in it. I then found a good used stock 400 damper and bought a new GM 400 f/w and it was a go!
Worked out great except I opted for a 292/230, 109/107, .480" lift hi-cam when I shoulda used the 280/228, ?/?, .480" hy-cam instead b/c I am at 9.5 to 1.
This is the inexpensive way to build an engine if you trust yourself to assemble it correctly.

I heard mixed reviews of larry's so went with hyetech performance. They did a good job for the money. I went to the local track and saw a lot of guys had hyetech stickers and heard good stuff about them. The prices are great and they did an excellent job. You could get a standard 4 bolt 355 shortblock without the balancer, timing chain and cam for around a 1000. Get it flatdecked and slap your stuff and have a runner.
