I going to replace a rusted section of the toe /firewall panel . I found it under a glob of tar...never thought of that as filler ,but anyway. It seems to have had some sort of body sealer but was unrecognizable. Do you guys know if seam sealer is used in this area? It appears designed to drain water out so a little unsure of how/what to seal.

Water should not be getting into that part of your floor but it does all the time because of bad seals around the kick panels and rust in the upper cowl. That part of the floor should be solid and sealed with seam sealer. The surrounding metal looks good so you can probably cut out the rust and then weld in a piece of metal to close the hole. Use seam sealer along the joint between the toe panel and floor.

This floor area is just below the subframe attaching nut which is open to the front . The hole is there for drainage ....not by accident. Now I guess I just fill it back in with tar like the last guy did.....NOT.

I guess I will just clean up and apply rust bullet and forget any sealant.

Hi David..
I used a quart of brush on seam sealer over all my welded seams.
Painters Supply on Santa Fe & Hampden sells the stuff..
Its paintable and did a great job on my vert..

Yes the holes in the floor are for drainage but only druing the dipping process in the assembly plant. Once a car is completed, those holes are plugged. My car does not have a hole in that area. You should not have any water getting into your interior. If you leave that hole for drainage, water will enter from the road, soak your carpet/firewall pad and eventually rust out that area. Seal it.

I appreciate your input Daral. However, maybe mine is different but......the plate ( with the hole in it) on the underside of the floor is a separate piece from the floor inside. There is a space between the two that begins in that square area (which remains open into the engine compartment) where the front subframe bolts up. I am curious about how our two cars could be different. So, unless I do something to seal up that bolt area at the top water can enter there and be trapped in that space ...and will definitely rust out.

David - Here is what that area should look like. It appears that someone in the past cut out some rust and put in a patch. The previous ower did the same thing to my car but on the drivers side. If it were me, I would remove the patch, butt weld in a new patch (without a drain hole) and seam seal it up. The hole on the engine side of the firewall where the subframe bolt is located should be protected by the inner and outer fenders. This area of the floor is not protected and water will splash up into your car if you leave an open hole there. JMHO. Good luck with it.
