I think this is a very good deal. I like the forged bottom end and the hp number is good with a decent compression ratio. I spent about a grand more for my 427. i dont think you can go wrong with that set up. Just have the rest of the car setup to handle those kind of numbers.

The ad says aluminum heads, but the description states aluminum head optional?? They do not clear that up in the rest of their ad? Check that out, but looks like they take the hassle out of engine building!

pro comp heads? I would do a search on these heads.

Most of the guys on here think they are junk. I wonder if they would sub a different head for extra dough.

I just sent them an e-mail about that. Even so, the motor is a screaming deal compared to the rest I've been quoted locally. Most have been $8500+ with less torque...

What disadvantage would I encounter running those heads

Anythings better than the 350hp my blocks putting down now :boring:

It will be a screamer as it is for sure. The point is maybe a few bucks more for some name brand better made heads will save you from problems later. Thinner walls and cheap metals can lead to problems and $$$. Since you can choose the way YOU want it built I would spring for a little more and sleep better. I took my stock oval port heads and had them reworked and am getting 540 hp and 525 tq with redline around 6500 RPM. My builder said that the weight savings was about the only gain I would see unless I was going for max hp and racing with iron versus aluminum heads. Also aluminum can be easier to repair. However since I already had them it was cheaper than buying new. I am more than happy with their output and personally dont want more for my 67 which sees mainly street use. I will say I am a little timid when it comes time to drop the hammer with this big block:thumbsup:

This is a better deal, the seller is on the Chevelle board and his motors are proven. Couple of guys on the Chevelle board are running them. He's has a couple other flavors, so check out his other auctions. With all the money I have tied up in my pig, wish I saw this a couple of years back:

Agreed! My thoughts exactly. Cast crank and rods don't "git it" IMHO.

On the plus side, its certainly economical, though.

Seems like a great deal. I spent at least this much on my build maybe more. I prefer Dart, AFR or Brodix heads. I ended up with 8.5:1 compression so I will make less HP. Had I known I was going to end up spending so much I prob would have just got this.

as far as the numbers you're putting down, do you feel its a fun combo for mainly street use?

My 69 is a 4speed.

I've been following that thread and keeping an eye on it, but its hard to get over the fact that I get a 2 year unlimited mile warranty on this motor and the builder is local...

I personally would not want more power. Everybody has a different opinion of course. Lets just say when in first gear and the hammer gets dropped and second gear is grabbed it is like being shot out of a cannon with the hind end squirming for traction and you are hard pressed to keep everything on the straight and narrow. I have Slidealink bars which help tremendously. Would not want to attempt hammering on it without them. I just dont know how much more power you could sensibly use or need on the street.

So you guys like the Pro-Comp heads, no name forged crank and rods over proven GM cast units? FYI - the GM cast units are said to go to 600HP, and even over that they just dont fail. Who knows where those "forged" units came from. The Pro-Comp heads have been proven to be a disaster by qualified folks who actually checked them out. My point is, dont sell a BBC in stock form short - again, even with cast internals and 2 bolt mains, the d#mn things just dont blow-up (bottom-end wise)! Valve trains you have to be careful tough.

But, if the builder is local AND reputable, that make a difference.

For that kind of money and since they are local to you. . .buy it and drive it and worry about the warranty if something happens.

Looks like it could be a great deal. IMHO a warranty is just a piece of paper, and everyone know if something happends to a performance part its always your fault when you try to call them about it. (Was you racing it or hot rodding it) hell yeah.

Looks like a good deal...however I went with the 'other guy' on ebay for my big block:

All in, I had a turnkey engine for less than 6K (carb/ MSD/waterpump/wires etc) (his prices have risen a bit since I bought mine)...and it's a great engine.
He is active on the Chevelles forum as mike1231...and has a lot to say about getting oval heads to flow right!

Also he dyno's/breaks in all his engines (dyno sheet supplied)- no extra cost...so you know what will happen when YOU start it up!

Cast bottom end doesn't worry me- he builds engines the right way and is always willing to chat to customers/ give advice.

Personally I wouldn't want R port heads for the street...588 lbs Tq with my cast ovals is fine for me!

I couldn't find a better deal anywhere for the money...
