Green Machine

I took a rock off a dump truck that skipped off the face of the header panel. It left a dimple so that will have to be filled.(Barely seen except at the right angle.)The one with the dimple is about the size of a pencil eraser and the other is smaller. So I think total area is will be about 3-4 inches of work. The car is Fathom Green. I have been told that metallic paint and green in particular will be darker when over sprayed itself. I have a small amount of the original mix from the paint job. Should I have the whole panel repainted, or just have the repair feathered in. It's basecoat/clearcoat paint, brand unknown.

Since it is only the header panel I would paint the whole panel and not feather. Most paint shops can match paint these days. How old is the paint job?

Before you have bodywork done try calling a
paintless dent repair tech. I've used them
on occasion with great results.

If its on the header only, instead of sanding the chips out, evercoat makes a nice finishing putty, and fill the chips with it. You might have to do it twice cause the putty will shrink up. Use a stick and 320 grit paper to sand it keeping your repair as small as possible. When its time to spray, dust a small amount of sealer(just enough to fill the scratches)on the sanded area only, put some color on it and if you can still see the chip in a small way, let the color dry and go back with some 400 grit or finer and lightly sand that area so as to level it down(the chip will go away). After you have sanded the chip and put some more color on it, you might have to do it a couple of times, and you like what it looks like, clear it off. I might add, in the sealer and color coat stages, try to keep your air pressure as low as possible, but not so low that you dont get good atomization.

It was meant as a complement but didn't translate well via this electronic medium. We all have our areas of expertise here and yours obviously is in the body and paint area. I used to say to a friend of mine who was an umbeleivable fabricator that he could take a coat hangar and make a car out of it. His mind would work at about a thousand miles an hour and he really knew his shi- much in the same way you do.

Well, then I thank you. I had never heard that one before(but Ill remember it). Thats the one thing that makes this new era of communicating hard, you never know if somebody is paying a complament or being sarcastic. And glad to be of help... http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif
