Hey guys,

Looking at upgrading my steering box and replacing pump, hoses, etc. Reading some post about the 3rd gen upgrade and would like to know if the 1st gen fast ratio box is the same? Here is the link to the box from Ricks....... ah, Ecklers...:(

Happy Easter!
Thanks.

A firstgen fast ratio box would have roughly the same internal gearing, but would be valved for the overboosted "pinky power" steering feel popular in the 60's, rather than the high effort valving in the IROC box.

Thanks Jim,

That clears it up for me. Looks like I will be going with the 3rd gen upgrade as well.

Thanks, Joe

I wish I'd found this site before I bought my 1st gen quick ratio box to upgrade from manual to power.

Anyone looking for a 1st gen box? :)

I bought a Lares 972 quick ratio power steer box, a 1st gen box with 3rd gen IROC internals. Direct swap for original power steer box, no adapters needed. They are available at Advance Auto, NPD, Ebay, etc.

After doing a little more research I'm leaning towards the AGR-292117. It's a little more money but will be a direct bolt in. Any thoughts on this unit?

Thanks, Joe

They are all direct bolt in, what do you mean?
You are replacing everything, so buy your hoses to mate to whatever box you go with.

The 3g box from Rockauto for $125 + ship, is hard to beat.

Direct bolt in probably wasn't the best choice of words, what I meant is I wouldn't have to change the pitman arm, hoses, etc. My pump and hoses are less than a year old.

Thanks, Joe

Greg,
What part number from Rock Auto did you get? Did you have to change anything?

I'm running an AGR 292117 on my '68. It blew up at about 250miles, and I sent it back to AGR for repair. It was out of the warranty period, but they fixed it for free. So then they tested it before they shipped it to me, and it blew up again on their test dyno. So they fixed it again, and this time actually fixed the nicked snap ring groove that caused both failures, and finally shipped it back to me--took about 6 weeks total. I've put another 700 miles on it since then and it works great now. I badly need more caster in my front alignment though!

If I were to do it over, I'd by a Lee box. Or maybe an Art Morrison subframe...

Clint,
Go to the sticky at the top of this forum heading, select "3rd gen steering box"

I just bought from the research of others, but my report is on the last page.....
I changed from manual to PS, and had to buy everything, but it is a totally, totally different car now. To make a 90 degree turn (ie left hand or right hand turn) 1/2 turn of the wheel!!

Cheers
