I have a 68 and the rag joint looks as if it is tearing(manual steering). I have a big block installed and don't want to take the motor out to replace the rag joint. Is a rag joint replacement possible with the big block in the car. Also any instructions will be a great help. From just looking seems as though it will be extremely tight to replace. Don't want to mess up paint on fenders. Any suggestions?

remove the header or exhaust manifold, and you should be able to drop the steering box out the bottom.

Why not just pull the whole column out a couple inches (after unbolting the column from the ragjoint)?

I just did this on my 68 big block.
As mentioned, you have to disconnect the steering column to move it back out of the way, but you do not have to completely remove it.
Are you rebuilding the rag joint or replacing it with a new one?

68 ragtop,
From reading other posts everyone here is opposed to rebuilding the rag joint. I will probably replace it but if a good rebuild would be easier and just as good I would rebuild it. Any thoughts? Thanks

Man, a RJ doesn't cost that much. Just replace it.

For a nicely built ragjoint, the Lares company makes a good one for not much money. You can get them at Advance Auto for sure, and the Checker, Schucks lines from the same company I would imagine.

I think they were like $40
