Mar 29th, 08, 01:49 AM
i have just found a 68 camaro and i think its a yenko i will describe the car and hope someone can help me also i need a rough idea on value before i go any further sorry in advance if this is in the wrong forum i am new to this .

the car has been dry stored since 1974 (original owner died last year)
its red with black interior and black vinyl roof
its 4 speed 140 speedo yenko to left of gas filler 427 on the right
the whole front clip is missing also the engine has gone (i have found the engine but the guy wants big$ for it ) dose it make much difference in value if it has original engine and how much? can i get an original hood for it?
the vin is 124378n459580 also it has a trunk spoiler
any help would be very much appreciated
the car is very solid but would need total restoration (it has original paint and vinyl roof) interior is almost mint

I dont see it on the Yenko VIN listings but i also have learned to say never say never as well.

I would get with Brian Henderson over on the Yenko Site www.yenko.net (http://www.yenko.net) and start getting all your questions answered. Without a doubt he is the most informed person when it comes to Yenko Cars as his shop restored them. With the price of Yenkos now days it might be worth it to have Brian come out and inspect the car.

What is the wording on the bottom of the cowl tag?

also did you get the info from the engine that was said to be in the car when it was sold as a Yenko?? Double check its build date/Engine stamps and look for a partial VIN (not the Camaros) on the front engine pad. If there is one I would say its not from the Camaro

KevinK7
Mar 29th, 08, 06:15 AM
...I can say this much, ...if it's 'company' in the barn was a Ford Lightwieght, ...it would sure seem to me that whoever the owner was, ...he was into 'race' cars. Definitely worth looking very closely at the car...
...Keep us posted :)

With the VIN posted the hunt is on by many people!

JOE58
Mar 29th, 08, 06:54 AM
Sounds interesting if it has an original 140 speedo.
Other items to check are....
diameter of front sway bar
look for Yenko ID tag with serial number in door jam
holes for Yenko installed SW Tach and gauges
post a picture of the trim tag
get a NICB report if you can

a replacement Yenko hood is expensive but can be found

good luck !

JOE58
Mar 29th, 08, 07:15 AM
non-Original 427 engine for a 67-68 Yenko does not have large effect on value since Yenko installed a replacement short block so you just need a correct cast no. and dated block

hard to say the car's value because you don't see many Yenko project cars for sale but to give you a rough idea - a well done "no issues" 68 Yenko Camaro may go for about
$250K-$300K a top level resto can be $100K to $150K depending on how much is needed so a project can be worth maybe $100K-?K?

I have a list of about 40 of the 65 68 Yenko Vins and even though 459580 is not on the list it is about 30 Vin's lower than the next one... and there are a group of 459XXX vins... Post a pic of the cowl tag...
Maybe this is your hood...

Stewie
Mar 29th, 08, 08:28 AM
When you say you found the original motor and the guy wants major dollars, when you are talking 200 Grand plus as someone stated final price tag how much can it be?
If you can prove that it is the orginal motor, and that it was a real Yenko then the sky is the limit I would think.
That lightweight Galaxy is no slouch either.
I personally have thought that the next ten years are going to be an amazing time in the muscle car era strictly because of the passing of the muscle car era owners.
I have personally seen several myself in the last couple of years. One was a 396, 1966Chevelle that has been in a heated concrete floored barn since the mid 70s.

firstgenaddict
Mar 29th, 08, 08:48 AM
I agree Stewie... there are going to be alot of owners passing or moving to retirement homes etc... and some nice cars are going to come out of the wood work!

JOE58
Mar 29th, 08, 10:09 AM
that would be an interesting Yenko story if the red hood from the blue car turns out to be the original one from the red car ?

(if the red car turns out to be a real Yenko)

firstgenaddict
Mar 29th, 08, 10:13 AM
Wouldn't it though... the story on the blue car is crazy as well... it was being hauled to a scrap yard and the roll back driver stopped to eat lunch... someone in the resturant saw the car and made a deal to buy it... then it sat in Nocal for along time before being bought a few years ago... it is currently under restoration and is owned by Dana Hurt...

gold67rs
Mar 29th, 08, 10:38 AM
Back to the subject car.

If the owner wants major big bucks for the car and it's not complete, I can assure you from experience that it's going to cost you BIG TIME just in parts and gray hairs alone. Finding correct wheels (pontiac) tach, etc.. along with all of the correct GM stuff is getting very expensive and hard to find.

Also if the car is an RS. Well.... now we are talking about another level.

Contact me off line if you want. I am not interested in buying but can help you decide what to do. When I was employed by Camaro Specialties we restored a 68 Yenko a few years ago and know full well what is involved.

Good luck.

Try doing it yourself,I'm sure the Team Camaro guys will help . Like someone said the motors were transplant, not original motors. I remember about 4 years ago walking a AZ junkyard and seeing a complete rust free 67/68 Camaro nose, look to be off a old race car.Had a name painted on the fenders. You can also try Schonye in Iowa, hes real good ,hands on with all the work, fair and has a Yenko himself.

Mar 30th, 08, 12:32 PM
Thanks for all the info so far, I have a couple of pictures but I dont know how to post them. I dont have much detailed info on the car at present because it is not at my place yet, in fact it is not even in the US yet so it will be a while before I have to decide what is best to do with it. I am a very serious car guy, I dont want any one thinking I am just some a hole looking for some free info. I have been collecting cars since I was 13.

1950 chevy truck
1960 bmw isetta
1968 dodge charger
1968 mustang coupe(wifes)
1970 mustang fast back
1979 pontiac transam

When the car gets to my place I will be happy for people to come and see it. I will also be very happy to take it to shows in "as found condition" (if I can still afford the gas by then).

My wife worked out how to do it here are the pictures

Simon, you said:

in fact it is not even in the US yet

Where is it???? You have to be VERY careful on overseas purchases. Just last week a member of our Mercedes Benz 190SL Group (another club I belong to), purchased a 190SL only to find it was a scam. He was (and is) out 30K and NO ONE can help him.

I'm not saying this is a scam, but be very careful.

Is the rear spoiler an original 1968 GM spoiler?

One of the 68 Yenkos was found with an aftermarket rear spoiler and it was thought to be a Yenko made aftermarket spoiler.

Yenko did have some custom made fiberglass parts built to his design and used on some of the Yenko cars and sold in Yenko parts catalogs.

If you can prove that it is the orginal motor, and that it was a real Yenko then the sky is the limit I would think.

How do you verify the "Yenko original" engine on a 68? (as opposed to the "Factory original") Did Yenko keep records of the CE code, or stamp the motors in some way?

YS8027 does not match the VIN that was listed in the first post.

JOE58
Apr 29th, 08, 05:02 AM
I would not worry that YS8027 does not match the VIN that is listed on yenko.net because that list is not correct.

It has 6 vin numbers (including 8027) that are 1967 vin numbers and 3 of them are also listed on both the 1967 vin and 1968 vin list.

These 6 vin numbers cannot be 1968 Camaro and have to be 1967 Camaro because they are N2xxxxx and 1968 used N3xxxxx.

I asked about this when the vins were first posted and they said that is how the list was found from Yenko so they must have been some sort of mix up when the list was made.

any updates on this great find?

yenkofind
May 1st, 08, 01:55 PM
Here are the pictures as promised. Sorry for keeping you all in suspense!! Trim Tag is quite clear but YS Plate in door jam is harder to read but if you look VERY HARD you will see YS 8027. Now I know the VIN & YS numbers dont match the yenko vin list but is this list set in stone?? The car left the US in 1969 and has had only 2 owners before it was parked in 1974 so I would think it is the REAL DEAL but you guys are the experts. Does any body have any idea on value of this car??? How many 1968 Yenkos were built & how many are left??? A list of known survivers would be use ful & maybe clearer than the Yenko Vin list. Also does any body recognise the Galaxie apparently it was raced in US when it was new & it was parked in 1974 also.

Nothing about that block to indicate it ever was installed in a Yenko, nor is it a COPO block. However, it is a 4 bolt CE and does date nicely before the build date of the car. In 68, Yenko was still transplanting, but I don't know if his CE motors were bought in batches, or as needed. The knowledgeable guys at Yenko.net could give you some help on that.

Looks like it has the COPO9737 sports car conversion, which included a 140mph speedo. The wheel is in the way, so I couldn't be certain, but looks like it.

Nice find. Congrats!

It doesn't have the disclaimer at the bottom "this vehicle meets Federal Motor yada yada yada" There is alot of speculation about the TT... that it may be the "Export Tag".

gold67rs
May 2nd, 08, 09:07 AM
I don't believe it had anything to do with export. I had a 1964 Impala SS and it had the same tag. If you look at any 1961-64 Impala for example it has the same tag as this Yenko.
At the moment it escapes but someone once told me the reason. Darn it.

It might have just been a Yenko thing when ordered.

I have found a little bit more history on the Yenko - it was stored away in December 1972 with 25,000 original miles, this is the first time it has moved since then. We have inspected the body and it is totally free of any cancer it only has light surface rust:thumbsup: When the cars arrive at my place I will be letting everyone know the interesting story behind these two cars. Simon,

I'm always up for a good Ford lightweight story, and pictures, as well as the story on the Yenko Camaro. It would be nice to know the history on the Ford. Where was it raced, who raced it, and who sponsored it, if that information is known. Thanks for saving the both of them.

Are you going through the last resting place with a fine-tooth comb? No telling what little pieces/trinkets that may be laying buried in that place. Personally I wouldnt want anything removed from the car untill I could go through it. Might have a protecto plate or clues to its lineage just laying on the floor, waiting to be discoverd.

Cant wait to here the rest of the story!

I noticed that the front fenders and header panel are missing the black SS stripes that would match up with the striping on the doors. Are they original to the car? Also noticed that the subframe is conspiciously absent, and there appears to be some damage to the driver's quarter. Possibly the results of a crackup on the track? Maybe his explains why the car was parked.

...as for the story behind the lightweight, ...we'd love to hear that too.

Are the quarters 'rolled' on the '68? ...looks like they might be.

The Yenko is now in the container and on the boat so now it is safe. To let you all know the story on this car, it was exported to England in 1969 and as Yenko Camaros were not very common in England it was very distinctive. In 1972 the owner was partaking in a spot of harmless street racing when the cops decided they wanted to apprehend the driver of the Yenko. After a short chase the Yenko had vanished into the night, the English police had no chance of catching this American beast in there under powered panda cars, as the car was so distinctive it was hidden in a garage until the dust settled. The owners need for speed was then satisfied with the Galaxie lightweight and the Yenko sat in the garage until the owner decided to pull the engine and put it in a dragster, unfortunately the front end sheet metal was put out side for the short time the engine would be out of the car. Well, months turned into years and the fenders rusted away, the dragster got sold and the Yenko just sat and the owner got older and lost interest. That is how a 25000 mile Yenko sat. It is now due to arrive back home on October 14, I will welcome any one who wants to come to see it at my place, you bring the beers I got the chips.:beers: I have come to the conclusion that I don’t have the resources to restore this car properly so unfortunately I think I will have to pass the car on to a new owner. I will post it in the appropriate section. All I am doing here is telling the story so you all know what is going on with this car. I will take pictures as it is coming out of the container and any pictures any body wants who can’t come and see it in person. I am very excited as I have not seen the car in person but also sad as I have realized that this car is out of my league.

If the body is rust free I really don't see why you could not complete the car your self, It should be a breeze compared to some of the rotted out projects we commonly see here.

it is a little confusing because there are 3 different 1968 Yenkos here and all are shown as project cars

The one being discussed in this thread is YS-8027 a red one found in England

The one shown in the desert picture is YS-8011 has a red hood but I think should be a blue car

The one on ebay is YS-8063 and is originally Corvette Bronze

I have shipped cars before. Just because the ship arrived doesn't mean the car is available yet. It takes time to unload the containers and for the shipping company to move them around, open them etc etc. Each container generally have several cars in it. It can take weeks before your car is ready for pickup.

Guys nobody is being scolded but there was a lot if soliciting and that lead to links of the car for sale. For any interested in the car it's in your own interest to not inquire in the forums. It can start bidding wars and really takes the thread off track. Posting links to pictures of the car is cool but if the links are to an ad for the car then the entire thread becomes a for sale ad. There is no need to plug a car like this, just telling the story will cause the buyers to contact the owner...

Very cool find, lets move on and talk about the car without mention of the car being available...

JOE58
Oct 21st, 08, 02:44 PM
I agree that a barn find post should not turn into a for sale ad but we also don't want to discourage a good barn find post. Seems like many people enjoy them.

I have enjoyed this post and thank "yenkofind" for posting it and the pictures and I hope to here more about the car.

Oct 22nd, 08, 08:04 AM
I agree Joe but there is a fine line about 'talking about the barn find' and seeing people asking the owner for info. to buy it. Thats our only concern. We mods get emails from other members when there are 'selling' efforts, either outright or sublte. Id rather not get the emails so this is where we need to step in and do some 'trimming' and yet keep the thread alive for "car talk".
Hope that clarifies it, from my perspective. :)

Great story on how the Yenko got to England and is life there. Maybe I missed it but I was also interested in what led you to the car, how you found about about it and what happend between then and now with the car back in the US. "Simon ,
Great story on how the Yenko got to England and is life there. Maybe I missed it but I was also interested in what led you to the car, how you found about about it and what happend between then and now with the car back in the US. I have found a few "barn find" Porsche race cars and recently bought an IROC RSR out of Columbia that belonged to Pablo Escobar . "

Yeah, will the gas tank only take like a gallon of gas? Pull it while your at it.

i have just found a magazine that was produced in england that ran an artical on this car telling readers about the awesome performance of this yenko camaro , i have been in contact with the then owner and he told me that he bought the car from a used car lot in london england in early 1972 and that he had to sell it in late 1972 due to the birth of his daughter, not long after the sale the car went into storage only to sit till 2008.

Unfortunately there are no door panels on a race car and any "spare" tire is in the pits :) If you watch the Pablo Escobar story on History Channel the show Pablo standing next to my car after a race in Columbia.

One of Pablo's family members ended up with the car. And the car came back to the USA . Here is what it ooked liek when Pablito had it

I have just received some cool paper work for the yenko , the original log book (title), the last mot (english vehicle safety certificate) and a fuel ration book for large engine cars, i have also found out that the car was put in storage in 1973 not 1972 , i think this is the only 68 yenko with english paper work, it even says yenko on the log book !

That is a nice document. In the "Type or Title" box they wrote "Yenko Super Camaro".

That is what Yenko called them back in the day.

The owner must have told them that name.

Very cool to see the correct name used.

I've lived in England. Its a wet, damp place and the garages are horrid. Sounds like the owners were gears heads alaways tearing stuff apart. And it was a race car. Nothing surprising in my mind.

I just found this thread. What a pleasure to read it! Simon, do you still have it? If so, man build it, drive it, and enjoy it! Its an American Icon! How many people can say they own a REAL Yenko Camaro with History like that and can cruise it to car shows in its close to original state?? Dont worry about the mega millions it will take to resto it now..Enjoy it then sell it off later! I'm building a 67 Yenko tribute. And you can believe I'm going to get every penny of fun out of it. Whats the latest on your car? I wonder if it looked like this at one time.. If It did, and I had the chance to make it look like that again..IT WOULDNT BE FOR SALE!!!

So, did all first gen Yenkos use the same hood ?

What's the plan Charley, if you don't mind me askin'....full blown restoration or try to maintain the original survivor status ?

JOE58

So, did all first gen Yenkos use the same hood ?

1967 Yenko 427 Super Camaros mostly used a stock SS hood but had as an option a fiberglass 67 Corvette stinger style hood

In 1968, the Yenko Camaros mainly used the fiberglass hood. It was Don Yenko's own design that he patterned from the 1968 Corvette big block hood

Feb 7th, 12, 07:48 AM
This car doesn't meet what I would call survivor condition. Interior is nice and that's about it. I have a 496" ZL1 engine and a M22 with scattershield that would go great in this car. Other than engine-trans setup it will get restored back to stock.

Thanks Joe, guess I didn't give it much thought. All 69 Yenkos got ZL2 steel hoods.....? Another question while I'm at it ;); Are there any Yenko production records ? How many were built, etc.??

Charley, I recall you mentioning that engine and figured it was an offer to Simon. :)....and a few of us were trying to encourage Simon to KEEP this car !.....well, all I can say, and I don't have a clue as to what kinda deal was made, but from my point of view, this couldn't have worked out any better for all parties involved !.....especially the car !!

Thanks

Thanks

(This is probably a longer answer then you wanted but is a copy paste from my Yenko notes I have written.)

Yenko Chevrolet ran by their own rules so you can’t say they were "all" built one way or another but many were built the same.
If you walked into Yenko Chevy, Don would sell you a car built almost any way you wanted.

For example, there was one Yenko Stinger convertible built and at least one 68 Yenko 427 Camaro with AC. In addition some Yenkos were said to be built with L88 engines and one Corvette was said to have a ZL1 engine installed.
Yenko built many race cars for himself and others so there is no question that they can and would custom build cars to customer order.

On the hoods…….I have seen a lot of the documents on the 1967s and most did not have the Stinger hood but some original work orders do show it installed by Yenko.

I don’t know if every 1968 Yenko 427 Camaro had the fiberglass hood but I don’t recall any that had a different hood.

In 1969 the ZL2 (Super Scoop) hood was part of the 427 COPO 9561 Camaro package that Yenko used so most of the 1969 Yenko Camaros had it. I would not be shocked to hear of a 69 Yenko Camaro that was built with a fiberglass hood but I don’t recall any.

On the production numbers ….Yenko didn’t keep exact records however a good amount of records did survive. Vince E. has had original records since the early 1980s and his numbers are 54 1967 427 Camaros, 64 1968 Yenko Camaros, and 198 1969 Yenko Camaros.

Vince’s records show the 1967 Yenko Camaros with the YS-7xx stock numbers built under the Yenko Dick Harrell engineered program but there have been 6 vins found with YS-6xx stock numbers that were Yenko built before the Yenko/Harrell program. Two of these YS-6xx Yenkos have been found with documentation. If you use the Vince E number (54) and these 6 early YS-6xx vins, the total would be 60 vins for 1967 Yenko Camaros. This number should only be considered as an ”approximation” or “best estimate”

A note on the 1967 Yenko Camaros……..A list of 107 Yenko Camaro vins was found in the Yenko files but has proved to be inaccurate as a real list of 1967 427 Super Camaros.

A note on the 1969 Yenko Camaros……..Vince at first counted 201 vins but later changed his number to 198. Some people still use the 201 number even though the 198 number has been corrected over 25 years ago.

I would say the Yenko production numbers 60 (1967), 64 (1968), and 198 (1969) are close but should be considered as “best estimate”.
