I have a 69 Camaro SS with a 454, 700r4 tranny,750 cfm Edelbrock performer carb with manual secondaries. Yesterday I went out for a drive to warm the car up, the roads here are very dirty this time of year so I was just idiling along for 5 minutes so I would not get the car dirty, the oil pressure was good and the motor was up to temp (180f) I dropped it into first gear and started to open the throttle when the motor sputtered banged klunked and died!. I tried to re-start and the motor klunked badly then stalled again. We towed it home. The next day I pulled the flywheel cover off and removed the 3 bolts from the flywheel to the torque converter and tried starting to see if it was the motor or the tranny was broken, the motor ran but with lots of rattles. I then pulled the valve covers off, nothing broken there at first glance. When I pulled the sparkplugs out they were wet with gas. Could the motor have been that flooded? Has this ever happened to anyone? Was it some kind of hydraulic effect? Perhaps a float stuck open?I hope the motor is not broken, I have owned the car for only 3 weeks and have only put 12 miles on it. I am not a motor guy, my friend who is is coming over tonight to give me his thoughts and we will bar the motor over and watch the valve train move. Any suggestions?

Might have fried the points. if its a non modified ignition system check that the resistor wire is intact on the firewall and not bypassed allowing full voltage to the coil. If this is the case your points either welded together or fried out and will need replacement along with repairs or replacement of the resitor.

Wow, could be anything from a loose coil wire to a spun bearing.

Thanks guys, The car has a MSD Pro Billet distributor #85551 with a MSD Blaster coil,45k volts. I took off the dist. cap and it looks pretty dirty, there is actully some rust inside. This will be a good place to start.

The next question to ask is if the MSD setup is fired by points or a magnetic pickup. I don't run MSD and I'm only familiar with the 6AL box which can run with either points or pickup.

As for Points...
Two things that I learned as a young'n. Grease is good, but if you get too much on the distributor shaft, it can sling out onto the points. (Oh the hacked up wires while others on the road stopped to help). The second thing we learned is that that ol' cloth covered wire was different for a reason. A couple weeks after the greasy points, the coil cracked and ceased to function. We fried the coil after replacing the cruddy old (ballast) wire with a new copper wire.

That's been years ago, but I never forgot it.
