View Full Version : 1968 Rs Z28
hamiltonperformance Mar 30th, 08, 03:59 PM I have located a 1968 RS Z28 Corvette Bronze car with exceptionally complete documentation. The original engine is missing, but the original trans and rearend are still with the car. It is a basket case resulting from an unfinished restoration. Original tac, gauges, etc seems to all be there. The car is totally stripped down and appears to have only minor surface rust on a few parts. The car has been in California for years. The seller wants 20K. I realize original documented '68Zs are hard to find. Is he realistic or a little high?
firstgenaddict Mar 30th, 08, 04:47 PM Do you know how to tell if everything is there? ie can you look at a pile of parts and tell if there is missing items?
The engine and related parts (distributor, Carb, etc) can run thousands of dollars.
hamiltonperformance Mar 30th, 08, 11:03 PM Thank you for your response.
Yes, I realize a number of specific parts are very expensive. The engine is not with the car. No correct intake, carb, distributor, alternator, starter, etc. The prior owner did locate some original parts like exhaust manifolds, heads, A.I.R. pump, fan. It appears the car was complete except the engine. Of course it needs new paint, carpet, headliner, window felts and other parts. It looks like all the RS components are there along with the original sheet metal: spoiler trunk lid and spoiler, fenders, hood, header panel, lower valance, cowl panel, hinges, doors, inner fender wells, core support, radiator, fan shroud, wood grain dash, AM radio, hood latch /hinges etc. It appears mostly all the base components are there. The original bell housing, matching number trans, clutch, shifter, pedals, plastic wood steering wheel are all there. Basket case cars can always be tricky. I am very familiar with Camaros, but mostly 1969s. I do have some original parts in my collection already that I can use to help defer the restoration costs. I am looking for price feedback here because there are a number of very well informed enthusiasts on this site. The car market is currently in transition and I do not want to get too upside down with this purchase. I have not owned a '68 Z for a number of years and I do miss driving one. Again, thanks you for your help.
hamiltonperformance Mar 30th, 08, 11:04 PM Again thank you for your help.
wiskeesour Mar 30th, 08, 11:51 PM I know where there is a low serial nmber docmented 68Z/rs basket case for sale and I offered the guy 27K. No sale tho. LOL
In my Opinion, its worth what your willing to give. I could care less of I am upside down in a first gen Camaro. Its not about the money. Its...prestige.
kinsmd69 Mar 31st, 08, 02:53 AM In my opinion I believe the 68 RS/Z is worth every bit of $20k. Do you realize the rarity of this car, in the 68 camaro arena? Besides being a Z, 1 of 7100, it is a RS, which only 20%, as an estimate, of all 68s had that option. As an estimate only, that means only 1400 68 Zs probably had that option, which I'm sure the real figure is less cause who would put hideaways on a race car to make it go faster?? Then consider the color, bronze, a rare one again. I believe it is one of the rarest and most desirable colors sought after. Yes, there's always personal taste, but rare colors mean more $$$$. As for the engine and missing parts, it depends how you want to go, but figure $4-5k to get engine done. The market is down for all cars, but check out the plain orange/white 68Z,w/o orig. engine, hood, exhaust, on ebay going for $35k. Last year on Barrett/Jackson a restored(original how far?) 68Z tuxedo black car went for $85k. Then consider it wasnt an RS or Corvette Bronze! And in 68, what else could you have on your car for a rare optoin; cowl plenum?
Thats it. No pace car. No copo.
If you want more help in determining real Z, email me. If you dont like Corvette Bronze,
how about Brittish Green(RS), Forrest Green or Lemanz Blue? Maybe we could trade?
Good luck!

Yes
hamiltonperformance Mar 31st, 08, 10:04 AM Thank you all so much for your help. I am not in to these cars for the money, I just don't like getting too upside down in any one car. If I die the wife will have to sell most of them off just to keep her sanity.
The original paperwork includes the PROTECT-O-PLATE, Dealer Invoice and Order ($4157.96), Dealer Inspection and Adjustment Schedule and Highway Patrol Affidavit of Vehicle Safety Inspection dated 7-5-68. I closed the deal on the car this morning! The car is originally from Utah. I am now looking for a May 1968 MO engine block. I will determine what else I need once I pick up everything and sort thru all the boxes. Again thanks, this really is a great site with lots of friendly people.
firstgenaddict Mar 31st, 08, 10:13 AM POP paperwork make the car well worht the money... Great car and I love Corvette Bronze... go to the CRG website and look in the orphans section to see if maybe someone out there has your original engine.http://www.camaros.org/forum/index.php?board=12.0
