View Full Version : Spring anchor
burgdob Mar 30th, 08, 06:29 PM Man, nothing comes apart easy. I'm trying to get the spring anchor from the from spindle. It ain't budging. I'm getting new spindles, but can't find these anchors (I think that's what it's called). Any one know where I can find these?

quickboat Mar 30th, 08, 06:33 PM Thats a fine thread too. You might want to heat the spindle up a bit. maybe some ice on the anchor.
pdq67 Mar 31st, 08, 05:12 PM The right sized 3/4" drive socket, 3/4", "T"-handle and a 3-foot cheater bar will loosen it!
Been there, crushed my upper left side wisdom tooth, GRUNTING, tightening it back down!!
Tooth spit out in pieces over a couple a days! The good thing was that I never felt it!!

burgdob Apr 3rd, 08, 05:50 AM Mine appears to be different than most. This is a "stand off". The plate that the springs attach to go over it and the bolt goes thru it. Here's a pic assembled.
Is this the same as the Camaro (this is on a Firebird)

Daral Apr 3rd, 08, 07:25 AM That is different than my 67.

JimM Apr 3rd, 08, 09:43 AM Camaro ones that I've seen look like Daral's.
Unless you are putting drum brakes back on it, you can just use a regular grade 8 fine thread bolt.

burgdob Apr 5th, 08, 08:15 AM Thanks for the pic and info guys. I got out my MOTORS book (A must for everyone) and sure enough the front and rear on the Chevy is the same. On the Pontiac, the rear looks like the Chevy, but the front is like my pic.
Note my return springs are the same length, the actuating lever is shorter, and the springs are attached to the "guide" which slides over the piece I'm looking for. The bolt that goes into the spindle holds the whole mess in place. Soon I'm going to cut this stupid thing off and go from there. Thanks again.

burgdob Apr 6th, 08, 08:05 AM Well I finally got the stupid thing out. I ground some flats on it, put it in a vice, and beat the spindle to turn it. I was pressed into the spindle. I was happy and went over to make sure it fit into the replacement spindle (from a 68 Camaro) and to my surprise the spindles are different. The only difference being this top hole. On the Camaro, thread is bigger. On the FB the thread is smaller (for the bolt you see in my pic) and the top of the hole is much bigger for this piece to press into. Bottom line is I'll have to switch to the Camaro setup.
It's kind of surprising because folks sell Drum spindles for Camaro/Firebird as the same part. My Motors book clearly says this is the setup on all Pontiacs during this era. Gotta love GM.
Thanks for the help.
