Hello all,

I went Saturday and looked at this car and it is local to me..
1967 RS/SS clone that was just finished painting in May of 2007.. Was blue but now is Cortez Silver with black bumble bee stripe.. New emblems and bumpers, weatherstripping, chin spoiler, lens, etc.. Supposedly new interior kit but the back seat looks original, shifter is cheap, stewart warner gages under dash, and small tach installed... Door panels are new.. Black standard interior.. 350 engine with cam I think and a borg warner four speed with a 10 bolt multileaf rearend... I took 60 pictures of the car while I was there.. It was in a garage with no lights and the owner forgot to bring the key so I did not hear it run or get to look at the trunk... The car is at his dads house... Has had quarters put on both sides up but was put in up to the top of the body line, not complete correct quarters...

There are holes cut in the rear floor pans for I think subframe connectors.. Paint is already bubbling on the bottoms of both fenders and the paint is new as of May 2007.. Rearend leaks, hood sticks up at the rear on the drivers side, window trim is scratched from the paint process, glass is original and scratched, tail panel has filler and doesn't seem correct looking to me.. overspray everywhere, no trim code tag but does have vin.. hole in the bottom of the driver's side door.. Has heat, PS, manual disk brakes and has the RS option but does not work but he said all it needs is the solenoids to work that all parts are there... Needs tires for the ones on it are bald and dry rotted... Driver's side door seems to need adjusting... See pictures below for previous mentioned details...

I know the guy that painted the car and he said the the quarters weren't put in the best but that he cleaned them up real well and prepped for paint.. He said he just ground down any previous bondo and put new bondo over it and that the bubbling is probably some moisture in the bondo from before... Painter said the bondo is pretty solid and that he used a good quality base/clear for the job...

Has 8" rallies on it, traction bars...

VIN: 124377N219513

Can you tell from the pictures if it is an RS by looking in the engine compartment?

He said the trunk has pitting in the pan but I didn't get to look at it..

http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p129/jlcsuper/100_0395.jpg

I didn't get to hear the car run or see it out in the light but the paint looks good where it was sitting but needs a lot of detailing..

He is asking $19500 for the car and said it runs great..

What is a fair price for this car? And bear in mind I am looking for a car to keep for a very long time and enjoy... And I am suppose to go back and drive the car this evening or tomorrow and look at the trunk so a quick response will really help me out.. Thanks..

Thanks

James..

Wow, proablly not a RS, That is why the trim tag is proablly gone. Tags just dont fall off the car. I would not pay 19500 for that car, especially if the paint is falling apart and way to much work to deatil that car, there are way to many cars out there for sale that are nicer.... I would offer 14500 at the most. Maybe 15500 if you really want the car and buy it as a Clone.

Hope that helps.

Jeff

In todays market , I think you could get a better car for $19,500.00. Those issues with the bubbles are rust under the bondo or paint. Someone did'nt do a proper job before paint. Their only going to get worse. My best guess from the pics would be 14,000 tops. And then you will most likely spend another 10,000 getting it like you want it. JMHO

Thank You so much... I was thinking 15 grand so it is nice to think my thoughts are close... I doubt he will go that low... He said to make a reasonable offer but I am worried that this car will start showing all kinds of paint issues in the future.. It hasn't even been a year and the fenders are bubbling back up... I haven't actually seen a good car yet in my opinion... All of them have had some kind of rust issue but big money in my opinion... I was hoping I could find a good solid car for 20 grand....

Thanks again for the quick response.. It helps me in my decision...

It was clearly painted over a rusty car...I'd pass on this one. It would be interesting to see the seller's 'before' pics of the body. This is a project car with a very high price tag. Just my opinion.
Other TC members can probably see a lot of other issues from these pics...

PS Hood fit is not good, besides not being correct for a '67...and I wonder what the hole in the floor board is all about?

Also, who forgets to bring the key when showing a $20,000 dollar car?!

Not sure how it is on your coast, but might be a good idea to look in CA or AZ for a better deal. Seems like they run cheaper here. and then ship it over.

In comparison to how much I would pay for that car in CA in that condition I would try to get it for 12,500.

Theres a lot of money left to go into that car to make it right.

Wow... Thanks guys..

Believe me, I was very disappointed when he said that he forgot to bring the keys... My thoughts exactly as to who forgets to bring keys when they are asking 20 grand for a car!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Looks like the search continues..

And I agree that I would probably end up with a repaint on this car to make it right..

I also agree that they painted over a rusty car and I want a very solid car to begin with...

I might consider shipping a car if I could get a fellow TC member to check the car out for me but I want to continue my search for a while before going that route.. I am going to the Rod Run in Pigeon Forge TN in April so maybe I will see something up there...

Again, thanks for the honesty and fair review of the car... That is all I am looking for... I just hope I can find a good solid car in the future....

James, Try going to the Charlotte auto fair this thur, fri & sat at lowes motor speedway. Prices are coming down a little and you might find a nice car at a fair price. Anyway its a good way to spend a day  With 20K to spend you will most likely get some leads in your area at least !

I have already made plans for the Rod Run and had to make a choice between that show or the autofair so already locked in for the Rod Run... Hard to make all the shows with a beautiful wife and 2 wonderful children at home needing my time and attention... But thanks for the heads up...

I agree that project level cars are cheaper on the west coast but that finished cars are more expensive. I can only assume that the buyers here are just plain not interested in doing there own builds (making me an enigma)...

James,
I have no doubts based on pics and your description you are making the right decision. He probably didnt bring the keys because it either A..has mechanical issues or B..didnt want to back it out into the sunlight.
You should be able to find nicer car than that for 20k in todays market. I am always looking (for fun mostly)..if i see something that looks like a good deal i will pass it along.

Yea, I have to agree with everyone on this one. Lot's of signs point to a quick "resto" and sell. Paint shouldn't start bubbling after a year..

Engine bay looks like one of a project car, which it seems to be. And could you PLEASE tell the seller to straighten out the air cleaner...jus kiddin!

Good luck

For $20k you could find a nicer car for sure. And especially the issues with the paint job, I'd never buy a car that was recently painted. My buddy had a 68 Camaro in high school, brakes went out and he wrecked into a huge brick pillar. Anyways he ended up buying a 70 Camaro with the insurance money, fresh repaint, new interior, recent tune up, for a decent price. Within a couple months rust started to surface all over the car, and I mean all over. The only good in the car was the new interior, engine started to have issues so he donated it for a small tax right off. My pappy always said," Never buy a car in primer, or one with a fresh paint job." :beers:
