I want to repaint the black areas of my 69 Ralley Centers, what is the best way to do this?

I would get some flat black paint, thin it a tad, brush it in, let it dry and then take a rag with laquer thinner and wipe off the excess. The paint will stay in the recessed areas as long as you don't flood the rag with thinner.

Funny that you should ask this, as I had the same question while talking to a guy at local swap meet on Sat.

Anyway, he said to tape off both the inside and outside of the hub, then give the round part of the hub a spray with flat black, and after it dries to simply use a fine steel wool to take the paint off the edges....I think that I'll try that rather than get those $400 NOS ones that I was drooling over when this same guy stopped and shared this with me.

You will probably laugh at me but I used a black permanent marker on the "fin" area. I found one with a width nearly the same as the fins. They turned out pretty good but a little glossy.

As alanrw mentioned Flat Black Paint (I used paint from a spay as its more liquid) with a bush and wipe-out the excess. I also taped both end of the fins in order to prevent/limit excesses.

The center ornament is still sold by GM. I took my centers and had them polished then put new ornaments on. I didn't think I could make them look as good as they needed to look by painting. A little over-restored, but they look good! A set of 4 was under $200 shipped.

Another old trick (and I dont know if theyre still available) is the Testors paint pens. Fit well into the grooves to refurbish the black recesses.

The center "hat" is chromed potmetal. You can clean and shine, but wont be able to get rid of any pitting. The "dish" is stainless, easy to polish but is a bit difficult to straighten if needed.

It took me a while to collect a set that have no dents.

The whole cap may be available. I just bought the ornaments and used my centers. I probably exagerated some about collecting good ones. I had 3 good ones and got 4 more when I bought some of my YH wheels. I just picked the 4 dent free ones and had them polished. I was trying to save a few bucks. They look goood.:o

They still make those paint pens. #2549, flat black. I got one from Hobby Lobby.

I masked of as much as possible, rattle canned it, let it dry, then used real sticky tape to remove the paint from the fin edges and the center. Finished it off by going over all the edges with 0000 steel wool. Turned out better then I expected.
