: Paiting engin bay and frame?
1FSTLS1 Mar 31st, 08, 12:17 PM What paint would you guys recomend for painting my engin bay and frame. I am not out for show quality but looking for a good quality job. I want to go with black probably gloss. I want to use spray cans or my hvlp gun.
camarotoddd Mar 31st, 08, 04:38 PM I just finished mine and I used Flat Black from PCL. It is a 2 part urathane and seems to be pretty durable.
It cost me about $60 for the quart of paint and 1/2 pint of hardener.
It is not totally flat, has a kind of satin gloss to it. It is also called Hot Rod Black.
I would not recommend spray cans as they dont have near the durability of a 2 part paint. If you have a spray gun ..that is the way to go..
I will post pictures of mine later.
Rocketrod Mar 31st, 08, 07:13 PM I would spent the extra money and time to spray it. You can get excellent results with a rattle can, but it will not have that deep gloss, or the durability that a 2 part will have.
camarotoddd Mar 31st, 08, 11:40 PM Here is a picture of mine that I just finished with PCL Flat Black Urethane.
I like the fact that it is flat, which hides many imperfections, but is still durable and cleans up easily. It still has a satin sheen to it..
I have never had good luck with rattle cans, especially on such a large area..
I know Eastwood makes a paint for engine compartments, but it is laqcuer, which I wouldnt think would hold up as well as a 2 part urethane..

camarotoddd Mar 31st, 08, 11:43 PM I would not suggest doing it in gloss black unless you plan on getting the engine compartment almost flawless as far as prep goes...
The glossy black will show Every imperfection in the surface below the paint..
captcanuck68 Mar 31st, 08, 11:45 PM Listen to the experienced guys...without the hardner, the paint won't last, esp facing the road. Guess it depends if you are going to keep the car or flip it, eh? That clip will go through a few cans too in order to cover it right.

camarotoddd Mar 31st, 08, 11:58 PM Just the cowl, subframe , and inner fenders took a quart of sprayable paint....I would imagine that this would be quite at least 5 or six spray cans at 5 - 6 dollars each...
I put three coats on mine...
1969ss Apr 1st, 08, 01:36 AM You could paint your chassis ppg dp epoxy, it looks like this http://www.1969supersport.com/029.html, then paint your firewall more of a semi gloss.
Anyway, what I used is on my website if your interested.
Although camarotoddd's looks pretty good in flat black.
