Guess you know that I was just yanking Ed's chain on this one, eh?
But you know... might buy up ALL the wood ashtrays, corner the market... then pop them out at $5,000 in say, ten years!...but wonder what the buck will be worth by then?... there again, China will be prob popping them by then... oh well, yet another fortune lost.:(

gold67rs Apr 1st, 08, 07:25 AM A couple things to point out.
1. Ashtray in auction is NOT correct 1967 Firebirds as he states in the auction. The grain on the wood overlay of 1967 Firebirds run horizontal or side to side. 1968 Camaro woodgrain runs vertical.
2. 1967 Firebird ashtrays are flat and do not have the lip shown in the auction.
His ashtray is only correct for 1968 Camaros.
The woodgrain on a 1968 Firebird is totally different all together and also is flat design.
As a side note. The woodgrain inserts on the center panel on 1967 Firebirds and 1968 Camaros are also different. As is the 1968 Firebird.
I hope nobody bought it for a Firebird thinking it was correct.

captcanuck68 Apr 1st, 08, 07:36 AM Hey gold67rs, what year/car would a wood overlay with a burled pattern apply to?
capt
gold67rs Apr 1st, 08, 08:26 AM For a Firebird? That is 1968. Like the picture below?
The 67 Firebird and 68 Camaro used the same syle woodgrain except the direction of application was different. Plus the ashtrays were different in style.

68 Ragtop Apr 1st, 08, 08:45 AM His ashtray is only correct for 1968 Camaros.
That's what makes it rare, and it was only on custom and special interiors, and only after a certain date. Early cars with woodgrain center dash got the black ashtray in the same contoured front shape. Exact start of the wood grain ashtray is not known, but thought to be around January-March.
Ed B. might know more about the timeframe, he has been collecting 68 data for a while.
Z15CAM Apr 1st, 08, 09:00 AM Kinda reminds me that an identical Dipstick to mine sold on eBay for over $400. I could not resist but to message the buyer and inform him that I too had a fetish and was compelled to built my engine around that Dipstick - lol
chops Apr 1st, 08, 10:10 AM Well, if I ever get strapped for cash then.....

BOB68396/350 Apr 1st, 08, 10:48 AM So where could I get the zinc finish on my ashtray replated without destroying the woodgrain?

You couldn't... you'd have to dismantle it first.

James...I already have this complete burled set up, but without the air outlet... and was wondering if it would look strange in the '68 Cam? I think it would fit?... but it wouldn't be Camaro grained.... what's your take on this? Would you apply it, or sell the dash bezel and ash tray?

I'm sure it would look fine, but if you have a console with walnut woodgrain it might look a little funny.
Use what you've got until you can find the correct stuff.
Most people won't even know it's not correct.
Milt's 68 SS/RS 396 Apr 1st, 08, 03:23 PM Holy smokes. I guess the value just went up on my 68! :hurray:
mnm99 Apr 1st, 08, 05:01 PM Yea I just checked my cowl hood. It's a NOS piece still with the GM tag. Whats that worth? I heard a good penny.
Oh and I have the NOS wood grain ash tray too:yes:

DanW Apr 1st, 08, 07:47 PM Now I'll have to put a lock on my ashtray.
Everett#2390 Apr 1st, 08, 07:53 PM And to think I gave away to a New Jerseyite a Firebird center piece as shown because I thought I'd never use it nor sell it. Made him happy though!
Brentmc Apr 2nd, 08, 05:19 AM I followed prices on these last year and you could get them for $70 to $80...I wonder if this was just an price spike...
captcanuck68 Apr 2nd, 08, 08:28 AM Now I'll have to put a lock on my ashtray.
Dan no need for a lock...I'm starting up a specialized insurance plan, just to cover ashtrays...if you got one you might want in. :)
