View Full Version : Be-cool Radiator fan clearance
ryry Apr 1st, 08, 10:25 PM Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone using the be-cool big block module has had problems with the clearance between the water pump pulley and the radiator fans? I got the module with the two 11" fans and have it installed such that it is offset as much as possible towards the passenger side and cheated down as much as possible so that the passenger side fan motor misses the pulley by about a half inch. Anyone else have this issue? Any ideas for an easy resolution? I have the correct motor mounts, motor stands for the big block...
Thanks guys
:beers:

ZZ430DropTop67RS Apr 2nd, 08, 10:24 AM I ran into the same exact problem. I centered the gap between the fans in relation to the WP pulley by mounting the radiator and fans farther towards the passenger side than you did.
I also trimmed about 7/16" off the Spal shrouds so the fans are closer to the radiator, which made all of the difference.
I have about 7/16" clearance, and it's fine.

ryry Apr 2nd, 08, 10:42 AM As of now, I can fit a finger between the WP pulley and the fan motor... which is what I was worried about the pulley contacting. I guess I will have to play with it more. Im glad Im not the only one that had this issue! Thanks DropTop!
82Vettrin Apr 10th, 08, 11:14 AM no pic available, but I fought the same issue with dual fans, long water pump, BB.
offsetting the fans is the only solution I found as well which worked.
if you have a finger-thickness clearance, that should be plenty; the pulley won't gain near that much size at operating temp.
I had to mount my fans with the tabs and pull-thru straps, which I don't care for the cosmetics of, but it works for now.
I keep envisioning some sort of fiberglass, aluminum, or other composite-material shroud,, not as much for any air flow gain, but more for cosmetics.
johndoe75460 Apr 11th, 08, 08:24 AM I havent installed my fan yet but luckilly I have a SBC and by the looks of it there will be planty of room. Reasoning for my reply was what 82vettrin said about the fiberglass shroud. I was thinking of this myself. I have seen homemade remote control boat hulls made from balsa wood and reg house wall paneling with epoxy. I was thinking of measuring the outside of the radiator coil and making a frame, then making a smaller frame to exend from it about 2 - 3 inches having a flat back. then cutting the diameter of the fan. Covering this frame with thick plastic that you cover the floor with while painting as a divider and then fiberglassing over it. after taking the framing out you would have a 2-3 insh deep shroud and your airflow hole. and since the shroud is that deep there should be enough room to mount the fan on the inside of the shroud to save room. then just fiberglass some mounting brackets to the shroud. I realized the time and effort and cost and decided i will simply get some flat aluminum strips about 1/8 in thiick to mount the fan to for now. I realize my idea is probably somewhat half baked sounding but maybe it might spark an idea of your own. Happy motoring!
82Vettrin Apr 11th, 08, 11:34 AM the fans in my '96 Corvette are off-set mounted; that's what originally hatched the idea of off-set mounting for me :beers:
I'm surprised (by now) that Spal and some of the mfgr's haven't picked-up on the concept, coz I'm sure there are more than 4 of us out here in the world who've tackled this issue on their own
82Vettrin Apr 12th, 08, 12:02 PM this ended-up being my approach to the problem.

johndoe75460 Apr 13th, 08, 09:44 AM I know this is off the subject but what is that part called that you two used instead of a top alternater bracket? I have a SBC 350 w/long water pump and I bought a alt bracket for sbc350 the bracket extended more to the passenger side of the car and past my intake mount. Next I got one specifically for SBC350 LWP. this bracket will almost fit but even if I made it doesnt install straight. I have an afternarket edelbrock chrome intake but should that really make a difference? I like how you two decided to go, did you have problems with the bracket as well? I would greatly appreciate your help. And I must say you two have some bad ass motors!!!

Ken Packard Apr 16th, 08, 05:15 PM I am curious if using the short waterpump would solve this whole problem (however you may have a new problem with the pulley allignment). Maybe the pulley system you are using is designed for the long water pump which is ultimately interfering with the cooling system. I may be running into this problem as well. I have a BB with a March Pulley System (short waterpump) and am planning on the Be Cool rad. system. When I ordered the March System I went with the short pump (reverse rotation). Any input from anyone out there??
Thanks
