I recently purchased a full trunk pan and exstentions from Classic. My car is a 69 convertible. My exstentions were rusted and the trunk pan in this car was replaced years ago by a previous owner who did a lousy job. I know I can replace everything but i'm confused as to the order of what goes in first?I know that the side edges of the pan and the exstentions both sit on top of the rear frame rails.Does the full pan go in first and then the exstentions on top or, do the exstentions go in first then the full pan on top??

Grant, you have the trunk pan in the center, the extention meets the trnk pan on top of the frame rail. They should be butted up to each other .One does not sit on top of the other.i think the pan and extension where actaully one peice from the factory. Then the trunk drop-off goes on the outer edge of the extension and meets the bottom of the quarter panel. The ultimate way to do it is to butt the trunk pan to the extentions on top of the frame rail flange. Then the seam is invisible from underneath.(if you care about that) Then you only have to finsish of the seams that go from left to right. On my car the pan was good so i just overlapped the extension onto the pan, welded it and i will smooth the seam with Duraglass. http://www.libertyautorestoration.com/user/newtrunkext2.JPG

Shoddy, Thanks for the reply. My car now has the old exstentions removed. Part of the damaged trunk floor has been cut away because I already replaced the drivers side rear frame rail. I'm going to replace the pass framrail as well. Also the inner tail panel section. The new pan I have when set in place, overlaps the inner frame rail flange on both sides by a couple inches. Butt welding the exstentions to the new pan at the frame rail flange would be ideal but, would require me to remove a lot of good metal from the new pan to make fit. I was thinking I would get the other frame rail installed first, then set the new pan in place and tack it in-next, I would put the exstentions in and overlap and fill the way you did. What do you think??Part of my problem is that I already have a lot of the trunk area removed and am now trying to fit evrything together with all the new sheetmetal.

So the trunkpan covers the whole framerail? if so you could weld the trunkpan to the frame rail, then lay the extension over the pan and weld it like i did. That would be the easiest way.If you wanted to get fancy you could trim the pan edge so it is right to the outer frame flange then weld it then lay the extension over it and weld that. Then you wont see the seam as it will be hidden on top of the rail.

Shoddy, the new pan overlaps most of the rail -not quite the whole thing. I think i'll be ok setting the pan in as long as I get the new rail in place of the old one. Once I get the pan in, i'll decide how fancy I want to get with putting in the exstentions. Thanks for all your help!!
