OK Ive resorted to grovelling. As a first ever poster, I came I posted, I waited, I set photo links, and waited and posted and waited - got great help from admin and a couple of folks but basically and for whatever reason I have not gotten much feedback. Maybe this topic is not of much interest?? or controversial. Maybe everyone is busy with spring stuff, or maybe spring mating rituals ??, I am trying to establish support for my opinion that I found a 302 replacement CE from 73 under the 5/50. John Z was of tremendous help and his take on my photos is that it looks legit. Thanks in advance. You can find the posts under Help with 302 CE Thanks again to anyone with the knowledge and some time. Best regards Doug

Hey, if it's got a 010 block and a 1178 crank, it's a 302. The 492 heads are or should I say "were" the hot cylinder head back in 73. Just watch out for water leaks if those spring seats are opened up too much. The pistons were knurled too, so there might have been a piston to wall clearance problem there. Clean everything up, put it together and watch it turn 8000 rpms with ease.

Not everyone knows that much about 302's. Good luck anyway! :D

If JohnZ gave it a  , you're probably okay.

I built a Z last year with a CE in it. Everything in it was 302 correct, all the parts with it were dated and #'d right for it (except for the 492 heads which were common OTC replacements from my understanding).

Without the paperwork of the replacement, you only have the evidence of what is there to go by, so study and document everything that's there.

Thanks: Yes 010 and never a doubt its 302, (pulled apart and meas the 4 inch bore, found orig gm 11-1 trw pistons, full float pins, 4 blts mains, windage bolts, 1178 crank, B rods (which were standard replacement parts for service engine after 1970 and service replacement 492 heads with all dates at 73. Block cast k28/73 (Nov) at Saginaw (due to clock) then shipped to Flint and built as 302 dec 73 (from the other stamp on engine (see pictures) trying to verify the pad stampings (theres one on the pad and one other one (see photos). Anyone see these kinda numbers on a 73 replacement engine CE service engine with the 302 guts inside?? I plan to build this one for fun as the original driveline from my z/28 is set aside for safekeeping. The photo link is there under my post on Help with CE 302 ID, or go to 69zeezed and search for my album it should be public. Thanks

Thanks for all input- keep it coming huh/eh, I guess either way its a great candidate for a builder 2nd 302 for my 02D zee/zed. I will document every number and code i can find. Its at the mach shop now to measure taper and wear on each clyder, measure main and rod journals, measure ring lands, checking heads for warp, checking guide condition, etc. Not going to be decked for sure. Any swags on a decent price for this assembly would have been its hard to find any legit/or at least probable legit 302 stuff in 2008. Thanks again.

I sold it with a crossram setup to a friend for a Z he is building .

Here is the engine build link.
