: what? now I'm the high bidder
okiemark Apr 2nd, 08, 06:41 PM several days ago, I placed a bid on a car on Ebay. afterwards, I did some looking and decided not to place another bid based on a few reasons. now, I'm suddenly the high bidder (Yikes) and the auction ends in 1 day. Once I was outbid, I didn't place another bd and never thought more about it. now suddenly I'm the high bidder. I don't want the car and am sure I was outbid. what do I do?

If you didn't want it, you should have retracted your bid.
You bid, you agreed to pay that amount. You bought it.
okiemark Apr 2nd, 08, 06:56 PM i understand that part, I'm just saying I was outbid, didn't make another bid, now I'M the hightest bidder. how did that happen?
Jeff H Apr 2nd, 08, 06:58 PM The high bidder canceled his bid and now you're the high bidder again. Email the seller and he can cancel your bid unless he wants to be a pita. Tell him what happened and most likely he'll cancel the bid.
Havin' Fun Apr 2nd, 08, 06:59 PM The "highest" bidder retracted their bid therefore, you are the highest bidder.
I think you have this capability up until 24 hours before auction end.
keypilot Apr 2nd, 08, 06:59 PM the other guy retracted his bid. you should the same as soon as possible.
BelAirBob Apr 2nd, 08, 07:00 PM The guy who outbid you retracted his bid, making you the high bidder. I thought that you needed to bid again in order to be obligated though. As I recall, you needed to place an additional bid to show that you were still interested. Thats how I think Ebay used to work. You'd better ask them asap!
okiemark Apr 2nd, 08, 08:33 PM according to Ebay: IN ORDER TO WIN THIS ITEM, YOU MUST MEET THE RESERVE PRICE AND HAVE THE HIGHEST BID. .. if reserve is not met, highest bidder isn't obligated to purchase car. Seller can come back, lower reserve. but HIGHEST BIDDER MUST RE-BID. (" THE BIDDER MUST CONFIRM INTEREST IN THE ITEM SINCE THE HIGH BIDDER MAY HAVE BID ON ANOTHER ITEM WHEN THAT BIDDER DID NOT INITIALLY MEET THE RESERVE PRICE")..
I was freaking out because when I checkd my Ebay account it said I was not winning any bids. I just happen to click on that car and see I was the "highest bidder".

What you are stating is a situation where the reserve was not met and the seller decided to lower the reserve to a point where the reserve was met, thus the high bidder would be the winner if no other bids occured. So they require a recofirm bid.
However if your now the high bidder because the other bidder dropped out, that does not require a reconfirm bid, unless the reserve has been lowered.
If your not interested then like others said cancel you bid asap, thats what the other guy did most likely. I have seen alot of underhanded stuff on e-bay by sellers and buyers, so I have no quarm with retracting a bid if I get the slightest doubt about my interest in an item.
ie the high bidder on the item in question may have been a shill bid, used to rais the price of the item, and in hopes someone would bid higher they bid to be winning bidder. Then when auction gets closer they drop that bid and the next highest guy is now in the high bid seat.
amartinson Apr 3rd, 08, 05:50 AM What you quoted above is if you are the highest bidder without the reserve being met, then the seller lowers his reserve. That does not sound like your situtation according to your first post. If you and the bidder above you had both met reserve and his bid was removed, you are the high bidder.
As stated several times, I'm sure the seller will gladly remove your bid if you do not intend to buy. I would think a little harder before pressing the "bid now" button next time, though.
